SHORTS Tuchel plays down Maguire’s chances THOMAS TUCHEL has revealed Harry Maguire would only be his fifth-choice centreback in a major blow to the England defender’s hopes of going to the World Cup. Tuchel handed Maguire his first England start for 18 months in Saturday’s 1-1 friendly draw against Uruguay. In his first appearance under Tuchel, the Manchester United star delivered a solid display at Wembley. Maguire has appeared in three major tourna

he has injuries.” Asked whether Maguire would be in the squad if it had to be named now, Tuchel said: “If, if, if. We don’t need to name the squad tomorrow. He did a good game.” Henderson backs White after boos ENGLAND midfielder Jordan Henderson pledged to support Ben White after the Arsenal defender was booed during Saturday’s friendly against Uruguay. White was jeered by England fans when he came on as a second half substitute in the 1-1 draw

ments with England and has 65 caps. But while the German acknowledged Maguire’s ability, he hinted the 33-year-old was behind Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones and Trevoh Chalobah in his pecking order. “I got exactly what I thought, solid, solid central defender play. That’s what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and is the weapon for set-pieces,”Tuchel said. “I haven’t changed my mind but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile. I see Ezri ahead, I see Marc ahead. It’s no secret. I see Trevor on the level of mobility was slightly ahead of him. Also Stones, but

at Wembley before hearing more boos after scoring his side’s late opener. The 28-year-old capped a chaotic cameo when he conceded a stoppage-time penalty converted by Uruguay captain Federico Valverde. White was making his first England appearance since he walked out of the 2022 World Cup squad due to “personal reasons”. He then made himself unavailable for selection for the rest of Gareth Southgate’s reign as Three Lions boss. England’s current manager Thomas Tuchel has given White a “second chance”, but the rightback discovered the fans were less forgiving when he was introduced as Fikayo Tomori’s replacement on Saturday. “As teammates we are always there to support. A lot of the fans will be in support of all of the play ers,” the Brentford midfielder said. “I have been through it myself, but that is part and parcel of being an England player.”

England’s Madueke, Wharton and Stones also exit after picking up knocks E NGLAND have confirmed that Arsenal pair Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka are among the eight players who will be dropping out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Japan. Ű BY MIGUEL DELANEY

Arsenal winger Madueke was forced off in the first half after being involved in a heavy collision, but Manchester City’s Phil Foden is fine after he was replaced following a forceful tackle from Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo. Rice and Saka had reported along with the other nine late arrivals, but England confirmed that the pair will be returning to Arsenal for medical assess ment – one day after they had arrived for duty. Tuchel had earlier said he is “worried” for Madueke after the winger was forced off during the first half of England’s 1-1 friendly draw with Uruguay following a challenge the manager described as “on the edge”. Madueke was seen walking out of Wembley with his left knee in a brace, fol lowing a 37th-minute challenge from Rodrigo Aguirre. The 24-year-old forward was immedi ately substituted after treatment and there are as yet no details as to the extent of the injury. “I’m worried, of course, because I think he was a difference-maker,” Tuchel said of the Arsenal winger. “He started well, he was full of energy, he was ready to go. Very sad and upset and hopefully it’s not a big injury.” Tuchel also revealed that Stones was close to starting, only to feel an issue with his calf before the match. “He’s obviously very upset and at the moment he gets my full support because it helps him more than putting more pressure,” Tuchel said. – The Independent

Rice and Saka will be returning to the Premier League leaders for “medical assessment”, having only joined up with the England camp on Friday as part of a group of 11 players who had been rested for the 1-1 draw with Uruguay. Arsenal’s Noni Madueke and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton will also return to their clubs after picking up injuries in Friday’s draw at Wembley, while Manchester City’s John Stones will also leave the camp due to up a calf injury. Fikayo Tomori and Dominic Calvert Lewin depart having featured in the Uruguay game, along with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, leaving Tuchel with a 27-man squad for Wednesday’s (2.45am Malaysian time) match against Japan at Wembley. Meanwhile, captain Harry Kane, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Elliott Anderson, Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Dean Henderson will be joining the squad after arriving into camp on Friday. The England boss had already revealed a novel approach to the two games, explaining that he wanted to “split” his squad in two for the pre-World Cup friendlies and give his core group of players some rest.
