the familiar plump medjool or the revered ajwa, there are dozens of varieties grown across different regions – each type carrying its own flavour profile, texture and character. Here is a closer look at some of the most popular types of dates commonly found in markets and supermarkets.

D ATES are more than just a sweet treat enjoyed during Ramadan. For centuries this small fruit has been treasured across the Middle East and North Africa, not only for its natural sweetness but also for its deep cultural significance. While many people recognise Deglet Nour: Queen of dates While medjool may be called the king, deglet nour is often known as the “queen of dates”. This elegant variety originated from Algeria and Tunisia. Deglet nour dates are lighter in colour with a semi-dry texture. When held up to light, their translucent golden flesh almost glows. Their flavour is delicate compared with other varieties. Instead of heavy sweetness, deglet nour offers mild honey-like notes with hints of roasted nuts. Because they are less sticky, they are frequently used in baking and cooking.

Medjool: King of dates Often referred to as the “king of dates”, medjool dates are among the most luxurious varieties available. Originally grown in Morocco, they are now cultivated in regions such as Jordan, Palestine and California. Medjool dates are large, soft and incredibly rich in flavour. Their deep amber flesh carries notes of caramel, honey and brown sugar. The texture is almost melt-in-the-mouth, making them a favourite for desserts or simply enjoyed on their own. Because of their size and natural sweetness, medjool dates are often considered the most indulgent variety.

Dabbas: Small but full of flavour Dabbas dates may be smaller in size, but they pack plenty of character. Popular in parts of the Gulf region, these dates are known for their firm bite. Their flavour is mildly sweet with subtle nutty undertones, making them less cloying than some of the richer varieties. The texture is slightly dry yet pleasantly chewy. Dabbas dates are often enjoyed as a quick snack or paired with coffee.

Rabbie: Hidden gem Rabbie dates are less widely known, but highly appreciated among date enthusiasts. They originate from Iran and are often recognisable by their elongated shape and dark colour. These dates have a soft texture with a rich sweetness that leans towards dark honey and caramel. Some describe the flavour as slightly earthy with mild fruity notes. Because of their deep flavour profile, rabbie dates are often enjoyed on their own rather than used in cooking.

Khenaize: Velvety sweet delight Khenaize dates are popular in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. These dates are medium-sized and have a glossy dark skin. Their texture is soft and slightly sticky with a rich sweetness. Flavour-wise they carry notes of caramel and molasses with a gentle hint of dried fruit. Khenaize dates are often enjoyed as an everyday snack because they strike a good balance between sweetness and texture.

Ajwa: Prized date of Medina Ajwa dates are among the most revered varieties, grown mainly in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Sometimes called the “holy date”, they hold strong cultural and religious significance. Unlike many other dates, ajwa dates are smaller and darker with a slightly wrinkled appearance. Their flavour is less sugary than medjool, but far more complex. Ajwa dates carry subtle notes of caramel, dried fruit and even a hint of liquorice. The flesh is soft yet slightly dry, creating a balanced sweetness that many date enthusiasts appreciate.

Lulu: Pearl of dates The name lulu means “pearl” in Arabic, and these dates are known for their rounded shape and attractive golden-brown colour. Lulu dates are medium-sized with a firm yet slightly chewy texture. Their sweetness is moderate, with delicate notes of honey and malt. Because they are not overly sticky, they are easy to enjoy as a snack.

Safawi: Chocolatey favourite Safawi dates are another popular variety grown in Saudi Arabia. They are often recognised by their dark colour and elongated shape. In flavour, safawi dates are rich and bold with deep molasses-like sweetness. Some describe their taste as having faint chocolate or coffee undertones, which makes them particularly satisfying for those who enjoy a more robust flavour. The texture is soft and slightly chewy, making them just right for snacking.
