ARYNA SABALENKA (top, right) and Elena Rybakina moved into the Indian Wells final with straight-sets victories over Linda Noskova and Elina Svitolina yesterday, setting up a rematch of their Australian Open Grand Slam title clash. World No. 1 Sabalenka has been in formidable form this season, winning 15 of her first 16 matches, with her only defeat coming against Rybakina in the Melbourne showpiece in January. She powered past Noskova 6-3, 6-4 and will compete for the Indian Wells crown for the third time in four ߑ years, seeking her maiden title in the Californian desert. “It feels great, I’ve lost a couple of finals here, so I’ll make sure that I’m more than ready on Sunday. I’ll bring my best tennis and this is the year,” Sabalenka said. “Serve was the biggest thing in this match,” Sabalenka added. “(Noskova) is an incredible player, I felt that if I give her a small opportunity she will take it.” “I was trying to stay focused on my serve and try to put as much as pressure as I could on her serve. And, lucky me, I got this win.” Sabalenka noted that the challenge of

facing Rybakina is “all about the first few balls in every point.” “You know, if you dominate in those two points, I feel like most likely you’re gonna win the point. It’s very aggressive, very fast tennis. Yeah, I’m excited, actually.” Twice Grand Slam champion Rybakina overcame a stiff test to see off Ukraine’s Svitolina 7-5, 6-4, staying on track to claim a second title in the event. Today’s title match will mark the third final ߑ between Rybakina and Sabalenka in the last six months. Kazakh Rybakina has won their previous two encounters, lifting the WTA Finals trophy in November and securing the Australian Open title. “I’m going to fight as much as I can,” Rybakina said. “Hopefully it’s going to be a great match.” Rybakina’s serve once again played a central role. She won 78% of points behind her first serve and saved seven of nine break points during the match. Although Svitolina remained competi tive on return, she struggled to convert her opportunities, finishing with eight double faults compared to just one from Rybakina.– Reuters/Agencies Aberg grabs two-stroke lead LUDVIG ABERG fired a 9-under 63, one off the course record, to seize a two-stroke lead after the second round of the PGA Players Championship. The 26-year-old Swede made two eagles and six birdies against a lone bogey to stand on 12-under 132 after 36 holes at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Aberg answered his first bogey of the week at the par-four 15th with birdies at the par-five 16th and par-four 18th for the lead. “It was good, fought all the way to the end,“ Aberg said. “It was nice to birdie 16 and 18. Overall very pleased.” Xander Schauffele, the 2024 PGA Championship and British Open winner, was second on 134 after a 65 yesterday with fellow American Cameron Young third on 135 plus Canada’s Corey Conners and American Justin Thomas fourth on 136. “For the most part I felt like I was in con trol and felt like I was attacking the golf course versus playing defensive,” said Schauffele, who found every fairway. “It’s always easy to be aggressive from the fair way here.” Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler fired a 73 to stand on 145, one stroke inside the cut line. World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, the defend ing champion, fired a 71 to also stand on 145 and was not hampered by a back injury that forced him out last week at Bay Hill. “I didn’t really feel anything, I woke up this morning felt fine,“ McIlroy said. “It feels pretty much there. Not all the way there, but I feel like it’s just progressively getting better each and every day.” – AFP
