“We wanted to press them a lot, and we did, the errors came from our pressing.”– AFP Millwall close gap with derby win MILLWALL rode their luck to bolster their bid for pro motion to the Premier League with a 1-0 win against Derby yesterday. Alex Neil’s side took the lead through Josh Coburn’s goal in the 43rd minute at The Den. Barry Bannan’s freekick wasn’t cleared by Derby and Millwall defender Tristan Crama hooked the ball back into the six-yard box, where Coburn glanced his header in at the far post. That was enough to earn third-placed Millwall a fourth successive Championship victory as they closed the gap on second-placed Middlesbrough to

one point. Derby striker Patrick Agyemang hit the post in stoppage-time after earlier missing another golden opportunity to equalise in a second half dominated by the visitors. Millwall, who have won seven of their last nine games, will hope for a favour from south London neighbours Charlton when they face Middlesbrough overnight. Fourth-placed Ipswich are three points behind Millwall after a dramatic 3-3 draw at Stoke. Hull strengthened their grip on a playoff place with a 2-1 win at Wrexham. Vivaldo Semedo’s last-gasp equaliser denied rele gated Sheffield Wednesday their first win in 31 games as Watford salvaged a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.

“I am very good here, enjoying myself a lot, what I do on the pitch speaks for itself,” Griezmann told Movistar . “We will see, but the idea is to go until the final and let others talk. “(Playing in the Copa del Rey final) is my dream, my objective and I hope we can do something big.” Atletico, who finished as runners-up in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals, have a great chance to reach the quarterfinals. Spurs made three big mistakes, including two from goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, in the opening stages as the Rojiblancos raced into a 4-0 lead by the 22nd minute. “We took advantage of some errors of theirs, they were slipping a lot on the pitch and we’re used to it,” said Griezmann.

Griezmann dreaming big after Spurs rout

ATLETICO MADRID STAR Antoine Griezmann con firmed he plans to stay at the club and dreams of “doing something big”after thrashing Tottenham 5 2 in the Champions League yesterday. The French forward, 34, had been heavily linked with a move to MLS side Orlando City before the end of March, when the American league’s transfer window closes. However Griezmann found the net in Atletico’s big last 16 first leg triumph and, with a Copa del Rey final to come in April, is dreaming of silverware.

Slot frustrated by sloppy and sluggish Liverpool in Galatasaray defeat A RNE SLOT was left to rue Liverpool’s sloppy finishing as Galatasaray earned a 1-0 win in yesterday’s Champions League last-16 first leg. Slot’s side lost to Mario Lemina’s header early in the first half at the RAMS Stadium in Istanbul. Slot bemoaned the controversial VAR deci sion to rule out Konate’s goal, claiming “it’s not possible so many things can go against us” as they have in their two trips to Galatasaray, where Liverpool also lost in the group stage earlier this season.

Slot hinted referee Jesus Gil Manzano was influenced by the febrile atmosphere created by Galatasaray’s frenzied fans. “It’s always very difficult to talk to referees in a situation like that as they’re in communi cation with VAR so have to listen to what is being said,” Slot said. “If it’s correct that the goal was disallowed, which is difficult to judge as I’ve heard differ ent opinions from people, it’s not completely obvious but let’s say that decision is right.” Slot felt a tug on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk during the corner that led to the Konate incident was worthy of a penalty. Insisting it was the kind of challenge that would usually be punished in the Champions League, he said: “You look at how much they pulled on Virgil’s shirt before the ball hit Ibou’s arm, then it’s safe to say we weren’t the only ones impressed by the atmosphere here today. “In the Premier League there is much more allowed than in the Champions League. “That’s why I was so surprised it wasn’t a penalty because in all the other incidents where he thought he saw something when we made a foul and was so fast to blow his whistle and give Galatasaray a freekick. “Then it’s really, really, really surprising the same referee in another incident when they make the foul says he is going to accept this completely.” – AFP

The Reds were fortunate not to be further behind before halftime as Galatasaray created a host of chances to increase their lead. Liverpool improved after the interval, with Ibrahima Konate’s strike disallowed for hand ball. Mohamed Salah produced an anonymous display and was hauled off after an hour in his Liverpool record 81st Champions League appearance. “We started the game really well,” said Slot. “We had three or four great moments. The big gest moment when Florian (Wirtz) came across almost an open goal, but he couldn’t finish that ball,” Slot said. “We weren’t able to score and with their first attack it led to a corner and you have to give credit to the way when they get a chance. They played as if it’s the last chance of their lives. “That is definitely something we can learn from. We sometimes get our chances and it comes across as, like, we think we’ll get 10 more. “It’s already a difficult place to come to, but when you’re 1-0 down it makes it even harder.” Languishing sixth in the Premier League, Liverpool hope to salvage a turbulent cam paign by winning the Champions League, but this was the latest in a long line of erratic dis plays.
