Nod likely in June for Bill on PM tenure PUTRAJAYA: The government is confident that the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the prime minister’s term to 10 years will be passed by Parliament in the next session, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the confidence is based on the support of the majority of MPs for the proposed reform, although the Bill did not receive the backing of two-thirds of MPs in Parliament last Monday. Fadillah, who is also the chief government whip, said most MPs who were absent during the voting process expressed support for the Bill. “Two MPs have sent official letters explaining the reason for their absence, while several others have also done so verbally. “Some are stranded abroad due to the lack of flights. Except Bukit Gantang (Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal), who said he did not agree, the others all supported it. It was just a coincidence that the situation at the time prevented them from attending.” Fadillah was speaking after breaking fast with staff of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry on Wednesday. Madani government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the Bill would be tabled again in the Dewan Rakyat session in June after it was agreed at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday. Fadillah said the move to limit the prime minister’s term in office showed the commitment of the Madani government under Anwar’s leadership to reform the country’s administrative system. He also stressed that the proposed amendment does not affect the power of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or the institution of the Malay Rulers. The bloc vote on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 saw 146 MPs agreeing while 32 were absent and 44 did not vote. The amendment requires the support of at least two-thirds of the total MPs, which is 148, to be passed. – Bernama Report to embassies, M’sians in gulf told IPOH: Malaysians, including students, in conflict affected areas in the Middle East have been advised to immediately report to the Malaysian embassies in the respective countries to ensure their continued safety. Higher Education Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim said affected Malaysians must follow the emergency plans and procedures activated by Malaysian missions abroad. “I believe our missions and embassies in Iran and neighbouring countries affected by the conflict are prepared with emergency plans. “I hope Malaysians who are stranded will follow all instructions and report themselves as soon as possible.” He was speaking after officiating at the Apple Education Classroom at Ungku Omar Polytechnic on Wednesday. He said the government always prioritises the safety of its citizens in conflict areas. “Alhamdulillah , our embassies have always found ways and taken measures to ensure that the safety of Malaysians abroad remains protected, wherever conflicts occur. “I understand that with the current airspace disruptions and related issues, there will be difficulties.” On the concerns of parents of students, Adam Adli advised them to stay in contact with the Foreign Ministry as well as relevant authorities to obtain the latest information. He said Malaysia would usually be given priority due to the strong diplomatic ties and cooperation established with the countries involved. – Bernama

transportation via the Strait of Hormuz affected, oil prices could increase even higher if the conflict continues. Earlier, Anwar attended a high-level management meeting at the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry to discuss its strategic direction and key agenda as well as to provide guidance on advancing the country’s agri food sector. Topics discussed included governance and administration of the agri-food sector as well as infrastructure development to support a five-season padi planting programme over two years. Also discussed were amendments to the Protection of New Plant Varieties Act 2004, Malaysia’s potential participation in the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants, the implementation of Agro Madani sales and preparations for the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro Tourism Exhibition 2026 with the theme “Creating Value for Food Security”. Anwar also attended a Ramadan Tazkirah session delivered by Federal Territories Mufti Ahmad Fauwaz Ali @ Fadzil and performed Zohor prayers with ministry staff.
He was speaking after the Ramadan Ihya’ event with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Wisma Tani yesterday. However, he added that prolonged geopolitical tensions could have indirect effects, particularly on oil prices, transportation costs and the prices of imported goods. “If this conflict continues and oil prices rise, it could affect transportation costs and subsequently the prices of imported items.” Mohamad said Malaysia maintains strong export links, especially with the United Arab Emirates and neighboring countries. He also said fertiliser supplies remain stable as Malaysia sources them from countries not involved in the conflict. Addressing concerns over potential price increases due to possible higher oil costs, Mohamad highlighted the ministry’s contingency measures. “We have buffer stocks of rice that can cover supply for five months, and with stocks from shops, it is enough for seven months. “Other crisis management measures are also on standby. We are prepared to act if necessary.” Analysts have predicted that with

allows the government to maintain fuel prices at reasonable levels for the people even amid global crude price fluctuations. “The Finance Ministry continues to review subsidy allocations and fiscal implications to ensure national financial stability. “Historically, when crude prices exceed certain levels, revenue for national oil companies like Petronas rises. At the same time, government subsidy burdens could also increase,” said Akmal. He stressed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is committed to ensuring that any domestic policy decision is made cautiously and based on data. “Current market developments do not indicate that the government will make any drastic policy changes, including the pricing of RON95 petrol. “Any impact from the ongoing conflict will continue to be monitored before any decision is made.”
He was replying to Senator Tiew Way Keng, who asked about Malaysia’s dependence on Middle Eastern markets and potential domestic economic effects. Mohd Shahar said the country’s inflation remains under control, adding that the government continues to prioritise the wellbeing of the people. Earlier, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the government does not plan to make drastic changes to current policies, particularly regarding the subsidised price of RON95, despite global oil markets facing uncertainty due to international conflicts. He said conflicts often trigger sudden surges in Brent crude oil prices but the government, through relevant ministries, continuously monitors key indicators such as petroleum and gas prices to maintain domestic market stability. “The current targeted subsidy mechanism
PETALING JAYA: The government is assessing the risk of cost-push inflation amid rising oil and fuel prices caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict, said Economy Deputy Minister Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah. He added that tensions in the region, particularly given the fact that Iran is a major oil producer, could push energy costs higher and raise global trade expenses. “Conflicts in the Middle East can increase fuel prices. Since imports and exports rely heavily on logistics, higher fuel costs may lead to overall price increases, or what we call cost-push inflation. “The government is monitoring the situation and verifying information from multiple sources to gauge whether the impact could widen,” Mohd Shahar said in the Dewan Negara yesterday.

Security issues should not be used as political capital: NSC KUALA LUMPUR: Security issues should not be used as political capital, but resolved through bipartisan agreements to ensure the country’s stability and sovereignty continue to be preserved from elements of foreign influence. National Security Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Raja Nurshirwan Zainal Abidin stressed that Malaysia’s future lies in the hands of its people and the government, not external forces. He said strengthening internal resilience is crucial to ensure the country is not easily destabilised by foreign parties attempting to exploit differences in local political ideologies. “There must be consensus at all levels of society, particularly among the political elite, that security is an issue that should not be politicised,” he said during the Bicara Naratif: Dimensi Baharu Keselamatan Negara programme which was aired on RTM on Wednesday night. Raja Nurshirwan added that the federal government’s approach to national security transcends party political boundaries. He also said the council’s daily operations remain critical in safeguarding the country’s trade and economic value chain, particularly amid global conflicts such as tensions in West Asia that could trigger inflationary pressures. – Bernama PJ among highest in special education teacher-student ratio KUALA LUMPUR: Petaling Jaya is among the areas with the highest ratio of special education teachers to students, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday. Education Deputy Minister Wong Kah Woh said the situation was the case in several districts, despite the overall teacher-student ratio nearing the target of one teacher for 6.5 students. He said the ministry has outlined short and long-term measures to increase the number of special education teachers. “As a short-term measure, the ministry has introduced the Special Education Exposure Course for mainstream teachers interested in joining the special education programme.” He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Dr Mohd Hatta Md Ramli on the government’s readiness to address teacher shortages across different localities, including through private sector collaboration. For the long-term measure, Wong said recruitment was being done through the Teachers Education Institute via the five-year Bachelor of Teaching degree programme, in addition to appointments on a contract of service basis according to need. – Bernama alongside PN. “What is certain is that all our MPs remain in the opposition bloc with PN.” Wan Saiful was expelled from Bersatu after he was accused of masterminding the collection of statutory declarations among Bersatu division leaders seeking for Hamzah to take over the party leadership from President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Following months of intense power struggle, Hamzah and his men were expelled from Bersatu due to a breach of the party’s constitution – Clause 9.1.4 which requires Bersatu members to comply with the party’s constitution as well as its Code of Ethics and Conduct. However, recently, Muhyiddin also accused Hamzah of holding a secret meeting with Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to negotiate without Bersatu’s knowledge or permission. This, and numerous other alleged offences led the Bersatu disciplinary board to expel Hamzah and his faction, explained Muhyiddin.

PETALING JAYA: About 60% of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members could reach the basic savings level estimated at around RM390,000 by age 60 – if they continue contributing consistently and maintain their retirement accounts, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He said as of the end of last year, only 3.1 million or 41.2%, of active Malaysians aged 18 to 55 in the formal sector have reached the basic savings benchmark for their age, up from 30% in 2022. “This leaves 4.42 million or 58.8% of formal sector members still short of the minimum savings target needed to ensure adequate funds for retirement,” he said during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Negara yesterday. Amir Hamzah was replying to a supplementary question from Senator Datuk Ng Keng Heng regarding the government’s official estimate of the percentage of citizens who are expected not to reach the sufficient minimum savings level by retirement age in the next 10 to 20 years. He said the government, through the EPF, is committed to curbing the erosion of basic retirement savings caused by early withdrawals by introducing the Retirement Income Adequacy (RIA) benchmark. “RIA serves as a guide for members to assess the sufficiency of their savings before making withdrawals, promoting more prudent long-term financial planning. “Several initiatives are also ongoing to boost savings, including account restructuring through flexible accounts, encouraging voluntary contributions and active promotion of programmes such as i-Simpan, i-Saraan and i-Topup.” Amir Hamzah also highlighted that the number of active employers registered with the EPF rose 4.2% to 640,391 in 2025, up from 614,563 in 2024. PETALING JAYA: “We have yet to decide on the steps to be taken by MPs and assemblymen supporting us. This requires careful consideration as it involves the anti-hopping law.” This was the statement made by Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan to theSun yesterday when he provided an update on the ongoing negotiations to take over Parti Keluarga Malaysia. Wan Saiful was expelled from Bersatu and was part of a faction led by former Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. Wan Saiful, who was a former Supreme Council member and was sacked before Hamzah, said discussions have progressed smoothly and are now at an advanced stage, with only several technical matters left to iron out before a final decision is made. “ Alhamdulillah, negotiations have gone well and we are at the final stage. technical issues to resolve. As this is a new party, certain matters need to be settled first.” Wan Saiful also said Parti Keluarga Malaysia has yet to be registered but they are moving towards it. This had been confirmed by Registrar of Societies (ROS) director-general Datuk Zulfikar Ahmad who said Parti Keluarga Malaysia’s initial application to register as a political party was rejected by the ROS in 2022, as it did not meet the requirements set out under the First Schedule of the Societies Act 1966. Wan Saiful added that efforts are underway to conclude the talks as soon as possible, due to the growing curiosity among supporters at the grassroots level. “We are working to finalise the negotiations in the near future. Our supporters have started asking questions, so we will expedite the process. Once everything is concluded, we will make an official announcement. I hope our supporters can remain patient and wait for the announcement.” He added that contributions from formal sector employees also increased, rising 3.3% to 8.2 million in 2025 from 7.9 million the previous year. “Meanwhile, median salaries for active formal-sector Malaysian members climbed 6.3% to RM2,764 compared with RM2,600 in 2024. These positive trends helped push annual EPF contributions from Malaysian members to RM120 billion in 2025, a 12% increase from RM107.1 billion in 2024.” Amir Hamzah said to strengthen the RIA, EPF has rolled out several key initiatives, including the addition of RM15.7 billion to retirement accounts since May 2024, following an increase in the contribution allocation from 70% to 75%. He added that by Dec 2025, 364,000 members had registered for i-Topup contributions, allowing them to contribute beyond the statutory rate. Meanwhile, 187,000 spouses participated in the i-Sayang programme, with total transfers reaching RM371.3 million. “Voluntary contributions also saw significant growth, with 687,000 members
However, Wan Saiful stressed that no decision has been made regarding the course of action for MPs and state assemblymen citing legal implications under the anti-party hopping provisions. He added that there is no immediate urgency for elected representatives to make a move. “Even if MPs and assemblymen do not join immediately, it is not an issue as we have time until the dissolution of the legislative bodies. What is more important is for supporters and machinery members to come in first to begin preparations.” On speculation whether the group would formally align itself with Perikatan Nasional (PN), Wan Saiful said any definitive decision can only be made after the process of joining the new party is completed. “Whether or not we join PN can only be decided after our entry into the new party is finalised.” Nonetheless, he reaffirmed that all MPs aligned with him remain in the opposition bloc contributing RM15.25 billion under i-Simpan without government incentives, while i-Saraan contributions hit RM3.97 billion from 720,056 members, a 50.8% increase from 2024, accompanied by an 80.1% rise in government incentives to RM206.75 million.” Amir Hamzah said despite the improvement, retirement savings adequacy has yet to fully recover, particularly after the RM146 billion in Covid-19-related withdrawals that affected members’ savings. He emphasised that EPF is stepping up awareness campaigns to urge members to opt for monthly withdrawals instead of full lump sum withdrawals, which could reduce income after retirement. “Retirees are encouraged to avoid withdrawing their savings in a lump sum. Monthly withdrawals allow remaining balances to continue earning annual dividends, leveraging compounding to ensure funds last longer during retirement. Strengthening retirement savings requires sustained, long-term efforts to secure the wellbeing of Malaysians in their post-working years.”

FRIDAY | MAR 6, 2026 5 State govts to handle Hindu endowments PUTRAJAYA: The National Unity Ministry is of the view that the management of Hindu endowments is better handled by state governments, as it is closely linked to the ownership and administration of land for the construction and management of temples. In a statement yesterday, the ministry said although matters relating to Hindu endowments fall under federal jurisdiction, they are directly connected to land matters, which are under state authority. Hindu endowments are provided under Item 15(c) of the Federal List in the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution, while land matters fall under state jurisdiction as stipulated in Item 2 of the State List in the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution. “This approach is important to ensure that the management and administration of Hindu endowments can be carried out legally, systematically and in accordance with the applicable state laws,” the statement said. The ministry said this approach has been implemented through the establishment of the Penang Hindu Endowments Board, in which although the enabling law was enacted by the federal government at the time, the authority to establish the board was given to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Accordingly, the ministry said if the Hindu community in any state sees a need to establish a Hindu endowment board, the proposal can be submitted to the respective state government. The proposal can then be brought up through the Council of Ministers for Unity together with the state ministers of unity for Sabah and Sarawak, as well as the state executive councillors for unity. “The federal government is committed to considering such proposals and enacting the appropriate legislation for their establishment. “This is also in line with Article 11(3) of the Federal Constitution, which provides that every religious group has the right to hold and manage their property according to the law,” the statement said. The ministry said the Madani government is committed to safeguarding freedom of religion while ensuring harmony and unity among the multi-religious communities. – Bernama Ministry denies failure over racial issues KUALA LUMPUR: The National Unity Ministry has denied allegations that it failed to address racial and religious issues, including controversies surrounding the construction of houses of worship and a recent incident involving the desecration of the Quran . National Unity Deputy Minister R. Yuneswaran said the ministry’s role is to help maintain harmony and provide input through the Harmony Committee. The committe comprises 12 members from various ministries, including the Home Ministry, National Security Council and police. The National Unity Ministry only has powers under the Rukun Tetangga Act 2012 and does not have legal authority to prosecute individuals involved in such incidents. “Our focus is to manage issues through meetings and discussions, ensuring appropriate input is considered. “Therefore, I disagree with such claims as I am involved in various meetings to address these matters,” he said when winding up the debate on the motion of thanks for the Royal Address for the ministry in the Dewan Negara on Wednesday. Yuneswaran was responding to Senator Datuk Mustafa Musa, who voiced concern that weak enforcement by the ministry had allowed racial and religious issues to be ridiculed, while stressing the need for education and awareness to prevent the public from being influenced by those who exploit such matters. – Bernama
Ornamental fish species worth RM35,000 seized
KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities seized 675 prohibited ornamental fish worth RM35,674 during a multi-agency enforcement operation targeting aquarium traders at the Ornamental Fish Market in Jalan Pudu yesterday. Federal Territories Department of Fisheries director Suhanah Kassiron said the integrated operation involved the Fisheries Department, police, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, and the Wildlife and National Parks Department. “The species with the highest quantity was parrotfish, totalling 550. We also found flowerhorn and four arapaima,” she said after the operation. Suhanah said the seized fish species were taken to the Pudu police station before being transferred to a storage facility at the KL International Airport for further investigation. She said enforcement teams inspected six premises during the operation and detected several offences under fisheries regulations governing aquaculture activities in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. “We found that these premises did not possess valid permits and licences under the relevant fisheries regulations. “They were also found to be keeping, storing and trading prohibited fishes at their premises,” she said. Suhanah added that among the species discovered during the raid were sturgeon, midas and peacock bass, which are considered prohibited species due to the ecological risks they pose. “These fish can damage ecosystems if they are released into public waters. They are aggressive and can compete with local fish species,” she said. She urged the public to report any premises suspected of selling prohibited fish to the Fisheries Department so enforcement action could be taken. o Joint raid exposes six premises without valid permits or licences under regulations governing aquaculture activities in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya: Fisheries director Ű BY FAIZ RUZMAN newsdesk@thesundaily.com

Wildlife seizures may also be investigated under the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008, where applicable.
Suhanah added that the department had previously conducted awareness programmes and advisory campaigns for traders at the Pudu ornamental fish market. “However, we still found repeat offences. MACC said in the ongoing investigation, 12 individuals, including a federal minister, had already been called in to provide statements and had cooperated with investigators. “If Chai has nothing to hide, he should present himself and cooperate with the investigation.” MACC further revealed that prior to issuing the notice, the investigating officer had made several attempts to contact Chai, who was believed to be in the United Kingdom, including through WhatsApp messages starting Feb 24. However, the attempts went unanswered and the officer’s number was eventually blocked by Chai’s phone number on Feb 26. “The claim that MACC did not attempt to contact him before issuing the notice is completely untrue. The latest rise keeps China’s spending at a third of that of the United States, but the Asian power is working to close the gap. Beijing plans to spend 1.9 trillion yuan (RM1.09 trillion) on defence, according to a report published at the opening of the annual “Two Sessions” parliamentary meeting. Premier Li Qiang told delegates that China will aim to strengthen the military and “carry out major defence-related projects” over the next five years. Analysts said the budget would finance military salary increases, training, manoeuvres around Taiwan, cyber-warfare capabilities and advanced equipment purchases, among other things, according to the report. The increase marks a degree of Filipinos arrested over alleged spying for Beijing MANILA: Philippine authorities have apprehended three defence personnel who allegedly spied on behalf of China in what the country’s security agency has described as a “serious national security matter”, its spokesperson said yesterday. The trio, who worked for the Philippine Defence Department, navy and coast guard, provided their Chinese handlers with lists of military personnel and other sensitive information, National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson Cornelio Valencia told AFP. Operational details about resupply missions in the contested South China Sea were also included in the information handed over, he said. “There was cooptation over a period of time,“ he said on the efforts to woo the defence personnel, who he described as low-level analysts. “At the end of the day, it is always money,“ he said on their motives. Valencia said the trio, whose names and genders he did not disclose, are now actively cooperating with the government “to ensure we no longer have a problem”. In a statement on Wednesday, the NSC said it has “addressed and terminated” operations taken at “the behest of Chinese intelligence”, without offering details of the alleged espionage. “For reasons of national security, we cannot discuss identities, methods or timelines so as not to jeopardise ongoing operations. “Necessary actions have been taken against the individuals concerned, all Filipino nationals who have all confessed their complicity in espionage activities and are cooperating with authorities.” The NSC and the Chinese embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to AFP comment requests. have more ships than any other country, but it lags behind the US navy in tonnage, nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers. “The United States remains the world’s first-class armed forces in terms of its military hardware and the hard operational experience of its personnel,“ said Singapore-based Nanyang Technological University Chinese military specialist James Char. Swanstrom noted that the United States benefits from its superior global logistics, more advanced submarines and stealth technology, a larger nuclear arsenal, combat-experienced personnel and extensive alliance networks. However, the balance would be radically different closer to China’s shores if the US navy were to intervene militarily, for example, to support Taiwan against Beijing. “Most critically, neither side could ‘win’ meaningfully. Economic devastation, casualties and nuclear escalation risks would be catastrophic for all parties.” – AFP the travellers. Singapore is also working on a repatriation flight to bring home its citizens from Muscat, Oman tomorrow, said Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang. She said the repatriation flight will cater to Singaporeans in Oman and the United Arab Emirates, where about 60% of Singaporeans who have e-registered with the Foreign Ministry are located. Gan said in the coming days, the ministry will also establish assisted overland trips to help Singaporeans in Bahrain and Qatar travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where commercial flights are still available. “We will be reaching out to Singaporeans who have recently indicated that they would like assistance to return to Singapore,” she told reporters on Wednesday, the Straits Times reported. The ministry will work with airlines and local authorities in the Middle East to explore the feasibility of further repatriation flights, subject to flight routes and airport reopening schedules. Meanwhile, Singapore Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan expressed appreciation to the Gulf states for their efforts to ensure the safety of Singaporeans amid the ongoing conflicts. He highlighted that the welfare of Singaporeans remains a priority, and the republic’s overseas missions are focused on providing consular assistance to Singaporeans in the region. “We are doing our best to get Singaporeans to safety under these volatile circumstances.” He added that the republic endorses the Asean Foreign Ministers’ statement on the Middle East situation, describing the outbreak of conflict as deeply concerning. – Reuters

The Singapore Foreign Ministry and its overseas missions in the Middle East are conducting a survey to gauge the interest of Singaporeans in the region for an assisted departure due to ongoing airport closures. “Please note that this is a survey to assess the interest for assisted departures and is not a confirmation that evacuation operations will be mounted,” they said. China boosts defence spending with eye on US, Taiwan BEIJING: China yesterday announced a 7% boost to its defence budget for 2026 as it steadily increases spending to counter the United States and enforce its claims over Taiwan and the South China Sea. continuity as Beijing pursues a sweeping anti-graft purge of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), which included the ousting of top general Zhang Youxia in January. “China pursues an independent and self-reliant foreign policy. “However, without robust believed to be vast natural resources. China’s military buildup is fuelling an arms race in Asia and prompting some countries, particularly those with territorial disputes with China, to draw closer to Washington. In Taiwan, leader Lai Ching-te wants to increase military spending in response to Beijing, which does not rule out the use of force to take control of the island. The Philippines has also granted US access to more of its military bases. Japan has been shedding its strict pacifist stance, with a record defence budget worth US$58 billion approved in December for the coming fiscal year to expand its military capabilities. The question of whether China could win a conflict against the United States remains unanswered. The Chinese navy is considered to
China has maintained a steady increase in military spending of between 7% and 8% each year since 2016. However, its military spending as a percentage of GDP remains modest. China’s defence budget stood at 1.7% of GDP in 2024, well behind the US figure of 3.4% and Russia’s 7.1%, according to Sipri. “That is proportional to its economy and legitimate defence needs,“ explained Institute for Security and Development Policy director Niklas Swanstrom in Stockholm. China claims that its defence policy is solely aimed at protecting its territory, which it says includes self-ruled Taiwan. It has only one military base abroad, in Djibouti, in contrast

He added that the PLA must strengthen its capabilities to “fully restore” Chinese jurisdiction over the disputed Spratly Islands, a chain of reefs and atolls in the South China Sea that are also claimed by the Philippines and where there are

OIC decries missile attack on Turkiye ANKARA: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has denounced Iran’s firing of a ballistic missile towards Turkish airspace, which was intercepted and neutralised by Nato air and missile defence systems, Anadolu Ajansy reported. On Wednesday, the OIC expressed solidarity with Turkiye and affirmed its unwavering support in defending the country’s sovereignty, security and stability. Its General Secretariat called for an immediate end to any actions that could escalate tensions and destabilise the region. It emphasised that threatening member states and undermining their security violates the principles of international relations, which are founded on good neighbourliness and mutual respect. According to Turkiye’s National Defence Ministry, the missile was detected after crossing Iraqi and Syrian airspace and was engaged by allied defences. Debris from the missile fell in the Dortyol district of Hatay province in southern Turkiye, with no casualties or injuries reported. In a diplomatic response, Turkiye summoned Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh to the Foreign Ministry. During the meeting, it conveyed firm protest and deep concerns over the incident. Officials said any steps risking the expansion of conflicts and further destabilisation of the region must be avoided at all costs. In a statement carried by state media yesterday, Iran’s Armed Forces said it respects the sovereignty of Turkiye and denied firing any missile towards its territory. – Bernama-Anadolu Man hospitalised after bitten by shark SYDNEY: A man has been airlifted to a hospital after he was bitten by a shark while snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of the Australian state of Queensland yesterday, Xinhua reported. The Queensland Ambulance Service said the man in his 50s suffered a deep laceration to his arm and smaller lacerations to the abdomen and hand in the attack near Lady Elliot Island at the southern tip of the iconic reef. The man was airlifted to a mainland hospital in stable condition. A resort on the island said staff were notified of the attack at 8am local time and provided immediate assistance. It said relevant authorities were notified and the snorkelling zones on the western side of the island have been closed until further notice. “It is not known what type of shark was involved. Resort staff and marine shark experts are monitoring the closed snorkel zone.” The island’s website said about 30 different species of shark are frequently seen nearby, including hammerhead and tiger sharks on the western side of the island. In another case, Sydney police have issued a warning about authority scams targeting multicultural communities, with some victims losing thousands of dollars, reported Xinhua. New South Wales (NSW) police said yesterday the scams seem to be targeting multicultural communities across Sydney, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian groups. It said victims reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be an embassy or police official and telling them that their passport and personal information had been found on a person recently arrested abroad. The caller then tells the victim that they could be deported to face criminal charges abroad unless they pay a specified sum of money. CANBERRA: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said yesterday he could not rule out his country’s military participation in the escalating war in the Middle East. Carney’s visit to Australia this week has been overshadowed by the expanding war in the Middle East, sparked by a massive US-Israeli strike on Iran that killed former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Speaking alongside local counterpart Anthony Albanese in Canberra, Carney was asked whether there was a situation in which Canada would get involved. “One can never categorically rule out participation,” he said, stressing that the question was a hypothetical one. “We will stand by our allies,” he asserted, elaborating that “we will always defend Canadians”. o We will stand by our allies and always defend Canadians, says PM LOS ANGELES: The Pentagon on Wednesday identified two more soldiers who were killed in the attack on Iran. The two Army Reserve soldiers died on Sunday in a drone attack on a US military facility in Port Shuaiba, Kuwait that also killed four other reservists. The Pentagon said Major Jeffrey O’Brien, 45, of Iowa was killed in the attack and announced the “believed death” of Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert M. Marzan, 54, of Sacramento, California. Positive identification of Marzan will be completed by a medical examiner, it said. O’Brien and Marzan served in the 103rd Sustainment Command from Des Moines, Iowa, part of the army’s global logistics and supply operation. The US military on Tuesday identified four soldiers of the same command who also died
behind them. We must work together. Great powers can compel, but compulsion comes with costs, both reputational and financial. “Middle powers such as Australia and Canada hold this rare convening power because others know we mean what we say and we will match our values with our actions.” Carney added that the countries would work together as “strategic collaborators” to pool their vast combined rare earth mineral resources. He also detailed renewed cooperation in areas from defence to AI. “We know we must work with others who share our values to build solid capabilities.” He said they would otherwise risk being “caught between the hyperscalers and the hegemons”. He has frequently clashed with US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada and slapped extreme tariffs on the country. in New York ruled on Wednesday that importers are entitled to refunds for tariffs they had already paid, which the US Supreme Court recently declared unlawful. Citing a 1977 emergency law, US President Donald Trump had imposed tariffs on dozens of trading partners without congressional approval since the start of his second term. In a landmark ruling last month, the Supreme Court declared those tariffs unlawful. Several companies subsequently filed lawsuits against the government at the Court of International Trade in New York seeking refunds for tariffs already paid. According to calculations by the University of Pennsylvania, the issue could involve about US$175 billion (RM690 billion) for the US federal budget, equivalent to roughly 2.5% of the budget. – Reuters
Carney added that the US-Israeli strikes on Iran were “inconsistent with international law”. However, he supports efforts to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, a position that Canada takes “with regret” as it represents “another example of the failure of the international order”. He reiterated yesterday his call for a “de-escalation” of the conflict. Carney’s trip is part of a multi-country tour of the Asia-Pacific aimed at reducing reliance on the United States, a hedge against what he has described as a fading US-led global order. The Australia leg of the tour is aimed at bringing in investment and deepening ties with a like-minded “middle power” partner. Yesterday, he issued a rallying cry in Australia’s Parliament to “middle powers”, urging them to work together in an increasingly hegemonic world order. He said nations such as Australia and Canada face a stark choice – work together to help write the “new rules” of the global order or have great powers do it for them. “In this brave new world, middle powers cannot simply build higher walls and retreat in the drone attack, marking them the first casualties of the conflict. The military identified the soldiers as Capt Cody A. Khork, 35, of Winter Haven in Florida, Sgt First Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42, of Bellevue in Nebraska, Sgt First Class Nicole M. Amor, 39, of White Bear Lake in Minnesota and Sgt Declan J. Coady, 20, of West Des Moines in Iowa. The announcement comes as the conflict intensifies, with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth saying on Wednesday the United States “can sustain this fight easily for as long as we need to”. In a separate development, the US administration has suffered another setback in the legal dispute over its tariffs, reported German Press Agency. A judge at the US Court of International Trade
