Job not finished: Munoz Coach warns against complacency after JDT thump Melaka FC

JOHOR DARUL TA’ZIM (JDT) may have handed Melaka FC a thrashing in their Malaysia Cup quarterfinals, first-leg match on Friday night, but Southern Tigers head coach Xisco Munoz insists “the job is far from finished”. This is despite JDT hammering Melaka FC 5-0 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, with Ajdin Mujagic bagging a hattrick before Manuel Hidalgo and Marcos Guilherme chipped in with one apiece. Munoz emphasised that the team must continue to fight while maintain ing respect for their opponents, who will be at home in the return leg on Feb 25. “We need to fight, and I am sure we have great respect for our opponents. We will try to perform at our best level and give our best in the return leg,” he said at the post-match press conference. Munoz reiterated that the Southern Tigers take every match as part of their ongoing development process, noting that improvement remains a core objec tive within the club’s playing philoso phy. He also praised his players for their

to be a thorn in the side of the opposi tion when he doubled the lead three minutes later, converting another set piece from Hevel to make it 2-0. Melaka FC tried to fight back and nearly narrowed the gap in the 11th minute, but Simen Alexander Lyngbo’s shot missed the goal. Dino Kalesic’s long-range attempt in the 20th minute was easily controlled by JDT goalkeeper Christian Abad Amat while JDT’s lethal striker, Bergson da Silva, also had a chance to add to the score in the 40th minute, but his header was saved by Melaka FC goalkeeper Muhammad Haziq Aiman Mohd Esa. Entering the second half, Mujagic capped off a brilliant night by scoring his third in the 61st minute, securing the hattrick. Melaka FC’s frustrations grew as JDT widened the gap through Hidalgo, who added a goal in the 72nd minute follow ing a neat pass from Mujagic. Guilherme then showed great skill by dribbling past Muhammad Haziq Aiman to score the fifth goal three min utes later, ensuring absolute dominance for the home team. – Bernama

performance, especially hattrick hero Mujagic. Munoz added that the victory also serves as a timely boost ahead of JDT’s Feb 17 clash with Vissel Kobe in the AFC Champions League Elite at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. Meanwhile, Melaka FC coach E. Elavarasan has urged his team to forget about Friday’s defeat and to focus on the return-leg tie against the defending champions. He also called on his men to raise their performance when they entertain the defending champions, who he described as the best team in the Super League, in the return leg at home on Feb 25. “It won’t be easy for us to bounce back, not when we are facing such a strong team. For now, we only have to admit that we lost to a better team, and reset our focus for the next game,” he said. The hosts opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute through a header by Mujagic, who connected with a corner from Hector Hevel. The Bosnian-born striker continued
