Van Dijk disagrees with Slot after Liverpool’s defeat
VIRGIL VAN DIJK insists Liverpool FC only have themselves to blame for the loss to Manchester City, despite Arne Slot directing his frustration at the referee. The Reds suffered a costly 2-1 defeat at Anfield in a match that concluded in dramatic circumstances. Dominik Szoboszlai had put the home side ahead with a stunning free-kick, only to receive a red card late on. Liverpool were then left furious when Marc Guehi received only a yellow card despite hauling back Mohamed Salah as the Egyptian looked to be in on goal. In a match packed with contentious moments, Slot said on Sky Sports : “We can talk
have given it, he went so fast. We only have ourselves to blame. “We have to quickly turn our attention to Sunderland because that will be a tough one, unbeaten at home this season. A good challenge ahead.” When asked if he believes his team made progress despite the result against City, Van Dijk responded: “I’m not sure. It’s still a process. “The second half maybe felt like a step up but first half we were not in control and should have done better. Unfortunately, the penalty moment was the deciding moment and that is the reality.” – Express Newspapers
about the decisions. I would like to talk about the one time Mo was through on goal and Guehi holds his shirt.” “Everyone who has been in this stadium in the last eight years knows if Mo is in that position, it is a goal. So it is a denial of a goalscoring opportunity.” Van Dijk though adopted a contrasting perspective on the match to his manager, with the Liverpool captain declining to attribute any responsibility to referee Craig Pawson or the other officials. “We have no influence on that,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports . “(Matheus) Nunes’ penalty, he could

E DDIE HOWE (pic) said yesterday he would resign if he felt it was the best thing for Newcastle after a dismal run that has dropped the Magpies down to 12th in the Premier League. Howe has twice led the club into the Champions League and ended a 70-year wait to win a domestic trophy by lifting the League Cup since taking over at St James’ Park in 2021. The 48-year-old has been linked with succeeding Thomas Tuchel as England manager and with the job as the next perma nent Manchester United boss. But Howe vowed to “work better” and “do more” after his side were booed off following a 3-2 home defeat to Brentford on Sunday. “No, there’s no doubt in my mind,” he said when asked if he remains the right man to take the club forward. “That’s why I’m sat here. If there was, then I wouldn’t be because, as I said, the club is the most important thing. “I’d never put myself before the club. If I didn’t think I was the correct man to take the team forward and I could give the players what they need, then I would step aside and let someone else do it.” Newcastle’s realistic hopes of Champions League football next season appear to be gone as they are now 10 points adrift of the Premier League’s top five. Howe’s men were also dumped out of the League Cup by Manchester City Boro go top of Championship MIDDLESBROUGH won 2-1 at Sheffield United yesterday to move top of the Championship. A fifth consecutive win for Boro was secured thanks to first half strikes from Tommy Conway and Riley McGree as they climbed ahead of Coventry, despite a nervy finish after Patrick Bamford’s second half goal. Frank Lampard’s Coventry were held to a goalless draw at home to Oxford on Saturday, opening the door for Kim Hellberg’s side. They raced out of the blocks at Bramall Lane as Conway finished unerringly across Blades goalkeeper Michael Cooper with less than 20 minutes on the clock. McGree then doubled the visitor’s advantage on the stroke of halftime. Sheffield United struck next in the 73rd minute at the end of fine play by Kalvin Phillips and Gus Hamer. Boro’s task was made easier when Joe Rothwell, on for his Blades debut, was giving his marching orders for a poor challenge on Alan Browne with 10 minutes remaining. Malen lifts Roma level with Juve TWO GOALS from on-loan Donyell Malen drove Roma to a 2-0 win over Cagliari yesterday, lifting them level with fourth-placed Juventus in Serie A. a Champions League spot. After Juventus dropped two points at home to Lazio on Monday they sit fourth on 46 points with Roma now on level pegging, with 14 matches to go. Inter Milan are the runaway leaders of Serie A with 58 points, eight ahead of city rivals AC Milan, while Napoli, who host Roma this week end, have 49 in third place. Earlier, Atalanta beat struggling Cremonese 2-1 to consolidate a run of three wins and two draws over their last five Serie A games. Villarreal close in on Atletico VILLARREAL beat Espanyol 4-1 in La Liga yes terday, drawing them level on points with third placed Atletico Madrid. Goals by Georges Mikautadze, Nicolas Pepe and Alberto Moleiro, bolstered by an own goal by Jose Salinas, brought the Yellow Submarine to 45 points. But Leandro Cabrera’s late consolation goal for the visitors stopped Villarreal leapfrogging Atletico into third place. Atletico lost to Real Betis on Sunday, offering Villarreal the chance to close the gap. The Rojiblancos still remain third with a superior goal difference of just one compared to Villarreal’s, however the chasers boast a game in hand on Diego Simeone’s side. A fourth con secutive defeat for Espanyol meant the Catalans trail fifth-placed Betis by four points but are still in position to qualify for the Uefa Conference League – albeit with just a one-point lead on chasing Celta Vigo.
