Rose sails to Farmers victory

Djokovic hints at retirement as history bid evaporates NOVAK DJOKOVIC leaves the Australian Open still stuck on 24 Grand Slam titles and with fresh doubts about how many more tries he will have at winning an outright-record 25th. an easy relationship with the Melbourne fans. No. 2 Jannik Sinner, have left him unable to win another.

ENGLAND’S Justin Rose is a veteran on the PGA Tour, but he’s certainly not too old to make a big impact and establish records. Rose won the Farmers Insurance Open for the second time by shooting 2-under 70 yesterday in San Diego. “I’m still loving it,“ Rose said. “Still working hard.” Rose, 45, became the PGA Tour’s oldest golfer to secure a wire-to-wire finish in more than 15 years, finishing at 23-under 265 for a seven-stroke victory and setting the tournament’s scoring record. “The whole week has sort of been a record-setting week,“ he said. “I was just kind of aware of (the scoring record). I was aware of a big lead, but I kind of wanted to play for that.” He’s also the oldest winner of this tournament. Rose’s two highest scores came in the last two days at the Torrey Pines South Course, but he built such a lead beginning with Thursday’s 62 that it didn’t matter on his way to notching his 13th victory

“It feels amazing. I’m just super proud of (caddie) Jason (McDede) and I yesterday for how we fought those conditions,” said Korda. “For my team. I wouldn’t be here without them. We’re all pieces of a puzzle. I wouldn’t be who I am without them. “And to be able to do it here at Lake Nona, I mean, the conditions were so amazing.” Korda posted rounds of 68-71-64 and topped Yang (-10) by three strokes. Canada’s Brooke M. Henderson carded a 6-under 66 on Saturday and finished alone in third place at -7. Tournament officials hoped to start at 10am yesterday and play 72 holes. But, as Ricki Lasky, the LPGA’s chief business and operations officer, explained, Mother Nature had other ideas. – Field Level Media on the PGA Tour. Rose also won the tournament in 2019, though he only had two triumphs on the PGA Tour since then. Rocco Mediate, then 47, held a lead for all four rounds at the Frys.com Open, as it was then called, in October 2010. Pierceson Coody’s 65 marked the day’s best round and that lifted him to a share of second place at 16 under with South Korea’s Si Woo Kim (69) and Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune (69). Jake Knapp (67) and Germany’s Stephan Jaeger (68) shared fifth place at 15 under. Brooks Koepka shot 70 to complete his first tournament back on the PGA Tour, ending at 4-under and tied for 56th place. Improved putting marked his final round, which included five birdies and three bogeys. “The biggest change is I feel like I probably don’t know about half the guys,” Koepka said. “It will be a fun year, just getting to know everybody.” – Field Level Media

“Overall, for sure it’s been a fantastic tournament,” he said. “I knew that I’d probably have to beat two of them (Alcaraz and Sinner) on the way to the title. “I beat one, which is great, so it’s a step more further than I have gone in Grand Slams than last year. “Very nice, encouraging. But, you know, not enough for me.” So what next for one of the all-time greats? For whatever time is left, he won’t give up on that 25th Grand Slam crown, even if the odds are now stacked against him. “I always believe I can,”Djokovic said about finally eclipsing Court. “Otherwise, I wouldn’t be competing.” – AFP

“I want to just say in the end that you guys, particularly the last couple of matches, gave me something that I have never experienced in Australia,” he said. “That much love, support, positivity. I tried to give you back with good tennis over the years.” It had the ring of a farewell speech and did not appear to have been just an emotional response to defeat. He said he had prepared two speeches, one for winning and the other for losing. Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2023, drawing him level with the Australian Margaret Court at the top of the all-time list. But age and injuries, plus the emergence of world No. 1 Alcaraz and

The 38-year-old has consistently dismissed talk of retirement and said he is eyeing the defence of his Olympic gold at the Los Angeles Games in 2028. But after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in four sets in the final on Sunday, the Serb suggested he may not be back in Melbourne. “God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six months or 12 months,” he told the crowd at Rod Laver Arena. “So it has been a great ride. I love you guys.” Djokovic has won a record 10 Australian Opens and until Sunday had never lost a final there. But for all his success, Djokovic has not always had

After a 14-month drought, Korda hoisted a champions’ trophy yesterday after capturing the Tournament of Champions at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club. Korda won for the 16th time without leaving the clubhouse or practice range yesterday. The tournament was shortened to 54 holes and second-place finisher Amy Yang of South Korea could not make up three shots on two holes to tie Korda. Among Alcaraz’s milestones, his maiden Slam, at the US Open in 2022, made him the youngest cham pion of a men’s major since Nadal at the 2005 French Open. He was also the youngest man to ascend to the world No. 1 ranking. His Roland Garros coronation in 2024 ensured he was the youngest to win Grand Slam titles on clay, grass and hard courts. At this rate, Alcaraz is well on course to go down as one of the best in the history of tennis. But for now, he just wants to enjoy the moment and take in what he has done over the past fortnight and in his young career so far. “Right now I’m just trying to have time to realise what I’ve been doing,” he said. “I know I’m making history with some trophies, some tourna ments, some achievements that I’ve been getting. “For me it’s an honour to put my name in the history books.” – AFP

dar Grand Slam – winning all four majors in the same year – was next on his hit-list. “Well, it’s going to be a big chal lenge. Those are big words, to be honest. You know, I just want it to be one at a time,” he said. But Alcaraz does want to win the season-ending ATP Finals, having been defeated by the Italian Sinner last year in the title decider. And a Davis Cup crown with Spain is also on his radar. Alcaraz surprisingly split with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero in December after seven hugely suc cessful years together, with assistant coach Samuel Lopez taking over. He has not divulged the reasons behind the change in any depth, but took satisfaction from triumphing in Melbourne given all the speculation

The Spaniard beat Serbian great Novak Djokovic in four sets in Sunday’s Australian Open final, add ing his first Melbourne crown to his Wimbledon, US Open and French Open titles. In doing it at the age of 22 he sur passed legendary compatriot Rafael Nadal, who was 24 when he com pleted a career Grand Slam of all four majors. The now-retired Nadal was at Rod Laver Arena to see the world No. 1 beat Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, and Alcaraz said his presence helped inspire him to victory. It was Alcaraz’s seventh major title and he will head to the other three Grand Slams in 2026 as the man to beat once more, with world No. 2 Jannik Sinner his closest rival.
