LEWI S HAMILTO N hailed an “amaz ing” amount of mileage on a produc tive morning for Ferrari on day four of Formula One’s pre-season shake down at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Ferrari failed to win a race last year, dropping to fourth overall, and seven-times world champion Hamilton suffered his first season without a single podium appearance. They are hoping to be far more competitive this year, the start of a new engine era with the biggest rules reset that any of the drivers have experienced, although Mercedes are already looking ominously reliable.

Thursday was Hamilton’s first proper dry day in the car after rain hit Tuesday’s session, when he and teammate Charles Leclerc were both in action. Hamilton said he had got through his programme, before handing over to Leclerc, and had a “bit of an under standing of where the car is at and where we need to improve”. The Briton is in his second year at Ferrari after joining from Mercedes at the end of 2024. Formula One teams have two open tests in Bahrain next month before the season starts in Australia on March 8. – Reuters

“When you come to the test you always want to get a lot of mileage,” said Hamilton in an interview with Formula One television on Thursday. “Like, today I did 85 laps in the morn ing which is amazing. “Last year we had a worse start to testing. So this, considering it’s a completely new band of rules, it’s better than we’ve experienced in the past. So I’m really hopeful that contin ues.” All teams must choose three of five days to run their new car in the behind-closed-doors test in Barcelona, with Ferrari opting for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

B OXING CHAMPION Anthony Joshua held back tears as he opened up about the death of two of close pals. The 36-year-old boxing leg end was travelling in an SUV along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on De 29, when the vehicle he and four others were inside of crashed into a station ary truck parked at the side of the road. As a result of the crash, two men – Sina Ghami and Kevin Ayodele – were pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries. And now, speaking on his YouTube channel, Joshua has explained how his life has changed in the month after los ing two of his nearest. Joshua said: “This is the best way I could reach out to all of you far and wide, worldwide who are showing so much love, care, support through that tragic, traumatic time where we lost Lats and Sina in Nigeria. “The last time I spoke to you guys was in Miami. We had so many plans to wrap up 2025 and we were on a mission. We were on a mission. We went back home, went to see our families, and everything just got flipped upside on its head. “God’s the best planner. We can plan to the best of our capa bilities, but that was such an unforeseen circumstance that was out of all of our control. “Not only did their parents, their uncles, their cousins, their friends and myself lose two great men, we lost people who we dearly care about and have been major players in all of our lives. It’s tough, it’s really tough. “I’m not going to sit here and show all of my emotions. I know

in today’s day and age it’s easy to micro-analyse people and pass judgement, but I know what I feel and that’s all that matters to me. I know what my duty is. “They’re my brothers, my friends, first and foremost. Then we became business partners, we became hustlers, we became lieutenants, we became gener als, we became everything. We became housemates, we were living together.” After taking a second to col lect himself – while overcome with emotion – Joshua added: “Yeah, it’s a shame. It’s a shame. So there’s that side of things and what can I say? “One day my time will come, and I’m not scared, either. At all. It’s actually comforting knowing that I’ve got two brothers on the other side. I’ve lost people before, but I don’t think I’ve lost people like that, my left and my right. “Throughout this journey that I’ve been on, it’s not easy. I didn’t even realise that, I’m the big guy. But I was walking with giants, kept me protected, kept me shielded. But the mission must go on. I understand my duty – I understand what they wanted to do for their families. “So my goal is to continue to help them achieve their goals. Even though they may not be here in the physical, when I pray at night, when I pray in the morning, I know spiritually, they’re going to aid me through because it’s not just physical strength that’s going to get me through. “It’s going to take a lot of strength from the higher power, so I’m going to be definitely say ing my prayers and I’m going to help them fulfil their dreams for their families.” – Express Newspapers
