Norwich stun leaders Coventry

FRANK LAMPARD’S Coventry crashed to a 2-1 defeat at struggling Norwich yesterday as the Championship leaders suffered another away-day disappoint ment. Romain Esse, on loan from Crystal Palace, fired Coventry in front seven min utes before the break with a well-taken finish after Ruairi McConville blocked Victor Torp’s shot. Coventry almost made it 2-0 three minutes later, with Vladan Kovacevic needing to be at his best to palm away a rising drive from Hadji Wright. But Anis Ben Slimane equalised for Norwich, slotting home from Ali Ahmed’s pass just 35 seconds after the

Defensive errors are a problem, something we’ve been good at this season. “Some games aren’t easy to control in the Championship. We had more possession than them, and created enough chances, but games are always won in both boxes. “It’s not easy to come here on a Monday night against a team in good form and try to control every aspect of the game.” – AFP/Agencies

If you do that in the Championship you lose games. If you defend slop

interval. Canadian winger Ahmed mid way completed Norwich’s fightback through the second half. Ahmed’s first goal in English football came from Papa Diallo’s pass and Coventry were unable to respond as their winless away run extended to six league matches. Norwich moved up to 18th in the sec ond tier as boss Phillippe Clement con tinues to lift them away from the relega tion zone since taking over in November. “I want more. I hope this creates, for

E VERTON striker Thierno Barry extended his hot streak with a late equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw against lowly Leeds in the Premier League yesterday. David Moyes’ side were booed off at halftime after James Justin put Leeds ahead at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. But Barry eased Everton fans’ frustration with a composed finish 14 minutes from full time. The 23-year-old Frenchman has scored four goals in his last five League games after netting just once in his first 18 following his move from Villarreal last year. “If you’re a centre forward, you need to score goals and he hadn’t at the start. He’s getting better,” Moyes said. “He’s training well and getting used to scoring goals. We need to create more chances and we’re still trying to get our attacking players back. “I’m really pleased with the reaction. I’ve got a really strong group who demand from each other.” Everton are in 10th place, while Leeds sit six points above the Premier League relegation zone. Wins for West Ham and Nottingham Forest at the weekend had increased the pressure on Leeds to counter with a vic tory of their own as the relegation battle heats up. With that in mind, blowing the lead was a missed opportunity for Daniel Farke’s team, who have lost only one of their last 10 League matches. “We are a bit disappointed because we weren’t far away from winning it. We were very dominant in the first half,” Farke said. “It was an excellent away perform ance. Nothing is achieved yet, but we French striker cancels out Justin’s opener as Everton, Leeds share spoils Barry rescues Toffees

have to keep going and we have to stay humble.” Farke had described Dominic Calvert Lewin as “one of the best English strikers around” ahead of the Leeds striker’s first return to his former club. Calvert-Lewin has defied his critics since joining Leeds in August, scoring eight goals in his last 10 League matches after netting just three times in the final season of an injury-plagued spell with Everton. But Calvert-Lewin was unable to haunt Everton in his return to Merseyside. Leeds went ahead with a well-crafted move in the 28th minute. Anton Stach crossed towards Calvert Lewin and James Tarkowski was unable to clear, allowing Justin time to pounce with a clinical finish from 10 yards. Calvert-Lewin was inches away from doubling Leeds’ advantage moments later when he prodded Jayden Bogle’s cross against the post from close-range. Fresh from winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, Iliman Ndiaye had a chance to hauled Everton level after the interval but Sebastiaan Bornauw made a superb last-ditch block. Barry went close with an audacious flick that forced a brilliant save from Leeds keeper Karl Darlow. It was a warning Leeds failed to heed as Barry hauled Everton level in the 76th minute. Barry made a perfectly timed run to meet Idrissa Gueye’s low cross, clipping a deft finish over Darlow from six yards. Everton pushed for a winner and Gueye, another of Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations heroes, almost got it when he thundered a fierce strike against the bar. – AFP
