Yu Qi to defend title against Vitidsarn WORLD No.1 men’s singles shuttler Shi Yu Qi of China moved a step closer to defending his Malaysia Open title after advancing to the final of the 2026 edition at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, yesterday. success, a factor that helped him record his eighth win in 12 meetings against Antonsen and set up a final clash against Thailand’s former 2023 world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn. “Tomorrow will be a new challenge for me and I will give my all,” he told reporters in a post-match interview at the mixed zone.

Fei withdrew ahead of their semifinal clash. In the women’s doubles, sixth seeds Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee of South Korea produced a commanding performance to stun defending champions and fifth-seeded Japanese pair Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto 21-16, 21-12. Earlier, top seeds and 2024 champions Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning of China stormed into the final following a 21-8, 21-17 straight-games victory over South Korea’s Jeong Na Eun Lee Yeon Woo. – Bernama

had to expend a lot of energy due to the slow shuttle move ment on court thoughout the game and said he will give his best to clinch his first Super 1000 title today. China’s second seed Wang Zhi Yi continued her impressive run by brushing aside India’s former world champion Pusarla V. Sindhu 21-16, 21-15. Zhi Yi’s final challenge will come from reigning champion and top seed An Se Young of South Korea, who advanced without taking to the court after China’s fourth seed Chen Yu

The top seed denied Denmark’s third seed and 2024 champion Anders Antonsen a place in the final, needing just 46 minutes to secure a 21-13, 21-14 straight-sets victory in their semifinal of the season opening tournament. The 29-year-old said patience was the key to his

NATIONAL mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto admitted that his team’s failure to maintain focus and consistency, espe cially in the aspect of service and receiv ing, was one of the main reasons for their elimination in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Malaysia Open, despite having a clear game plan and physical advantages. Nova said the national pair, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, should have been able to go further, but the lapses in several important points gave space to the oppo nents from Hong Kong to collect easy points. “First of all, we would like to apologise. This time we failed to reach the minimum target to advance to the final. “From the start of the third set, to the last point, we lost a lot of points in the service and receiving position. They appeared not ready to serve and receive the shuttle. “So in just one, two, three strokes, Hong Kong could have grabbed points from there. I think their focus was weak. They can’t maintain constant focus,” he said. Commenting on the pair’s overall per formance after winning the world title, Nova saw an improvement in terms of stability in the early rounds, but stressed the need for more consistency until the semifinals and finals. “If you look at performance, they are now a little more consistent. They rarely lose in the first or second round. However, in my opinion, to be truly con sistent is to reach the final or semifinals in a row, that has not yet been achieved.

almost the same as here. So I think we need to forget what happened here. “Hopefully we can. If we think that we have lost here and missed the target, I think that situation may cause us to fail again from now on. “So I think the result here should be forgotten even though we are disap pointed, and we must forget this result.” Tang Jie- Ee Wei were knocked out in the quarterfinals yesterday after losing to Hong Kong pair Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet 17-21, 21-17, 10-21 in a tough match that lasted 67 minutes at the Axiata Arena. – Bernama

“Being top-level players, they need to be consistent. They can’t just do that. At the minimum level, they need to follow their seeding position. “If they are seeded third or fourth, then at least they need to be at that level. After that, only then can they improve because they can no longer lose in the quarterfi nals,” he said. Ahead of the Indian Open scheduled to take place from Jan 13 to 18, Nova hopes his men can quickly forget the disappoint ment of playing at home and focus fully on the next tournament. “The draw for the Indian Open may be

control the environment. “The most important thing is how we play, how we control the opponents’ movement and maintain focus throughout the match – that’s the issue.” Commenting on tensions among supporters, Nidzam advised that football should not be turned into a platform for hostility, but instead be celebrated as a sport that unites people. He also reminded that many supporters attend matches with their children, who observe and judge, and if football is filled with quarrels, it would give a negative image of the sport. – Bernama

fought until the end of the match. Meanwhile, Nidzam declined to comment further on the issue of the referee, S. Logeswaran, delaying the final whistle beyond the stipulated seven minutes of added time. In the match, JDT scored the winning goal in the 98th minute through Manuel Hidalgo. “I don’t hold the whistle … I’m not sure, maybe the timing was different, everyone’s watch is different, but we need to stay positive. “It’s not about nine minutes or 10 minutes. The issue is that we must stay focused. We can’t control the referee, we can’t

strong concentration from minute to minute. At this point, that is the difference between us and JDT. “They have gone through a very good development process and are able to maintain the same intensity right until the end of the match,” he said. “In football, if you do not go through those phases, you will be punished. It is a bitter truth to swallow, but the team needs to learn to become ‘big boys’ in this league,” he told reporters after the match. Commenting on the players’ level of commitment, Nidzam said his team gave their all and

FACING champions such as Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) is not merely a test of physical strength, but also demands mental resilience and a high level of consistency, said Negeri Sembilan FC (NSFC) head coach Mohd Nidzam Jamil. He said this following the narrow 1-0 defeat to JDT in the Super League match at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Paroi, Seremban, on Friday night. His team gained an important experience that must be used to improve their ability to maintain focus, intensity and control of the game until the final minute. “Top-level players require
