I did it my way: Norris Lando thanks parents, friends for support after clinching F1 world title
Hamilton plans to bin phone following nightmare season SEVEN-TIMES world champion Lewis Hamilton plans to throw his phone in the bin as he does not want to speak to anyone when he heads into Formula One’s winter break after a nightmare debut season with Ferrari. The Briton joined the Italian team this season from Mercedes in a highly-anticipated move that paired the sport’s most successful driver with its most successful team. Expectations from the partnership were high, especially after Ferrari finished second in the constructors’ standings last year, fuelling hopes that Hamilton could challenge for an unprecedented eighth title. But the optimism soured and Hamilton has endured one of his worst seasons ever, with the Briton failing to stand on the podium all year for the first time in his career. He ended the year with three consecutive first phase qualifying exits and has cut an increasingly frustrated figure. On Saturday, he said he felt an “unbearable amount of anger and rage” after qualifying 16th for the Abu Dhabi finale. “At the moment I’m only looking forward to the break, just to disconnecting, not speaking to anyone,” said the 40 year-old despite recovering to an eighth-place finish in Sunday’s season-ending race. “No one will be able to get in touch with me this winter. I won’t have my phone with me and I’m looking forward to that. Completely unplug from the matrix. “I’ve generally always had it around. But this time, it’s going in the freaking bin.” Hamilton’s teammate Charles Leclerc, who finished fifth overall but raced to seven podiums, has struck an equally frustrated tone at Ferrari’s winless season. – Reuters
I N the end, Lando Norris won the Formula One championship his way. The McLaren driver finished third, behind Red Bull’s winner and title rival Max Verstappen and teammate Oscar Piastri, in the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi but that was only part of the story. “I believe I won the championship this year my way – by being a fair driver, by trying to be an honest driver,” the Briton told reporters in a champion’s news conference before the serious partying started. Norris accepted other champions had been more aggressive, more daring, but he had done what he needed to do and had performed under pressure. “My motivation is not here to prove I’m better than someone else. That’s not what makes me happy,” he explained. “I’m not going to wake up tomorrow and go, ‘I’m so happy because I beat Max.’ I honestly, deep down, don’t care about that. “I made my people happy. That’s all I really care about at the end of the day. I’m not going to wake up happy tomorrow because I can just go and say
to myself, ‘I’m world champion.’ It might make me smile, but it’s not going to be the truth. “It’s going to be ‘My mom’s happy. My dad’s happy. My sisters are happy. My brother’s happy. My friends are happy.’ And that’s all I need in my life.” Calm until the final few laps, Norris said his mind filled with memories of childhood and sacrifices made and he “started to shake a little bit”. By the time he crossed the line and the team radio exploded with congratulations from the pitwall, he was in tears with a wobbly voice and the extent of his emotion broadcast over the airwaves. “So much goes into achieving what we’ve achieved today,” he said, recalling his early days watching Formula One on television and seeing a go-kart for the first time. “This is not my world championship. This is ours. This is one where I get to say, ‘Thank you, mom,‘ and ‘Thank you, dad.’ “For the first time, I really get to say thank you to them, to my parents, to my family. And I get to really make them feel
like everything they did was worth it.” Norris said he had also to dig deep into his own resources, fighting back from mistakes and bad judgements in a rollercoaster season that at one point saw him 34 points behind Piastri after winning the opening round. As the Australian threatened to run away with the championship, he questioned his way of working and why he was making the decisions he did. In doing so, he managed to make the struggles turn into strength. Critics suggested he could not win a championship by wearing his heart on his sleeve, by being so laceratingly self critical, but he proved them wrong. “I feel like I have just managed to win it the way I wanted to win it, which was not by being someone I’m not,” said Norris, who nonetheless regretted some of the things he had said and done along the way. “I’m happy I could go out and be myself and win it Lando’s way, as (team boss) Andrea (Stella) would tell me. ‘I kept my cool, I kept to myself, I kept the focus on myself, and I got the most out of how I am.” – Reuters
MAX VERSTAPPEN said he had never driven better than this season after conceding the Formula One title to McLaren’s Lando Norris at Sunday’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Red Bull’s four-times world champion won under the Yas Marina floodlights as he tried to cap a comeback for the ages with a remarkable title triumph. Despite rounding out the season with more wins (8) than any other driver, Verstappen ultimately fell two points short, with Norris’ third-place finish enough to secure the Briton the title. When asked if this year had been the best he had driven, Verstappen said: “Yeah, I think so. I mean, I have no regrets about my season. “Of course, shame to miss out on the title but at the same time, for a long period of time I was not even thinking about the title. “I never felt like I was in it until a few rounds ago. That’s pretty crazy. But, yeah, you take your pride in different ways.” Verstappen put up a tough fight this season. The 28-year-old was 104 points adrift of the championship lead following his home Dutch Grand Prix at the end of August. He then bounced back in style, overcoming an initially uncompetitive car and a Red Bull leadership reshuffle that ousted Christian Horner, to take six wins from the final nine races. Sunday was his 10th consecutive top-three finish.

“Honestly, I’m sitting here now with probably a better feeling than what I had last year at this time because the second half of last year was pretty tricky at times as well,” he said referring to Red Bull’s drop in form in 2024, when he took just two wins from the final 14 races having won seven of the first 10.
Denied a record-equalling fifth consecutive title on Sunday, Verstappen was gracious in defeat and among the first to congratulate the new champion. He greeted Norris, a rival but also a friend, with a hug and a smile shortly after the Briton had stepped out of his McLaren after performing celebratory,
tyre-smoking doughnuts. “Winning your first title is something that I think we all dreamt of when you get into the sport,” said Verstappen. “You work for that since you’re a little kid, it’s what you dream of. So, when you win your first title, this is very emotional,” he added. – Reuters
Piastri looking forward to some R&R after tough season OSCAR PIASTRI looked he has been
friends, give my annual hellos and goodbyes,” he told reporters. “I’m looking forward to some time away from racing, to be honest. “It’s been a long, demanding season. As enjoyable as driving the fastest cars in the world is, a break now and again is always a nice thing. “So, I’m just looking forward to not thinking about race cars and spending time with people around me.” Like most of his compatriots,
following Australia’s Ashes hammering of England – they lead the series 2-0 – and hoped to catch some of the action at the fourth test in his home town Melbourne after Christmas. “There’s part of me that kind of wants the series to still be alive by that point, and part of me that really doesn’t,” said Piastri. “So I’ll take whatever we can get. It’s been enjoyable to watch for the last couple of weeks.” Next year sees the start of a
new engine era and a major change in the rules, which could rearrange the paddock pecking order and has also brought forward pre-season testing and launches to January. The season starts in Australia on March 8. McLaren will begin as double champions, having clinched a second successive constructors’ title back in October, and Piastri will have his sights on his teammate’s crown. “Obviously, the new season
is not far away so it’s going to be important to enjoy that time off and then come back refreshed with the new challenges for next year,” he said. “He (Norris) has obviously had a great season this year and is a deserving champion, but he’s still Lando Norris. It’s not like he’s become Superman. “So, I don’t think things will change with that. I’m expecting full fairness from the team and equality going forward. I don’t have any concerns that that will change at all.” – Reuters
forward to watching Australia beat England at cricket and enjoying some home summer sun after a Formula One season of highs and lows ended in disappointment on Sunday. The Australian’s bid to become his country’s first Formula One champion in 45 years fizzled out with third place overall as teammate Lando Norris took the crown in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. “I’m going back to Australia for a little bit, see my family and
