THE Malaysian contingent received a second chance when the country’s men’s 4x400m quartet automatically advanced to the final of the 2025 Deaflympics after two competing teams were disqualified and another did not finish in a dramatic turn of events at Komazawa Metropolitan Stadium in Tokyo, Japan yesterday. The national quartet, consisting of Muhammad Zumar Azman, Muhammad Shahrul Azmer Azman, Azlan Kuste and Deaf SEA Games sprint king Muhammad Zamir Azman, recorded a time of 3 minutes 33.94 seconds to finish third in the second heat of the first round, where they were previously in fifth place. According to the qualification format, only the top three in each of the two heats followed by the two fastest times overall qualify for the final scheduled to take place on Monday, thus maintaining Malaysia’s hopes of chasing a medal in the prestigious event. Meanwhile, Muhammad Shahrul Azmer, who was met by reporters, still found it hard to believe that the national team suddenly stepped onto the medal hunt stage but wanted to use the “miracle” as a fuel to show more courage when facing other giants in the final. “It was just a surprise but that’s okay I will still give my best and fight hard with my teammates,“ he said through a sign language interpreter yesterday. Earlier, in heat two, the Brazilian team did not finish the race while USA and Venezuela were eliminated, paving the way for the national squad to be in the final. – Bernama
JOHOR Darul Ta’zim (JDT) continued to maintain their unbeaten record in the Super League competition after a goal fest, crushing Melaka FC 7-1 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium (SSI) on Friday night. The win achieved today by Xisco Munoz’s team marked their 10th consecutive win this season, further solidifying the Southern Tigers’ dominance at the top of the league. Munoz said Friday’s was a timely lift ahead of their AFC Champions League (ACL) clash against Melbourne City. He said the team returned from a two-week break with renewed energy and character, elements he considers crucial as they prepare for the continental match in four days. He told reporters after the match that the team showed strong physicality and mentality despite the layoff, adding that the performance was ideal for their ACL preparations. Munoz acknowledged that breaking down the opponents’ low defensive block was difficult but praised his players for maintaining creativity, combining well through wide areas and central channels. Looking ahead to the ACL tie, Munoz reminded his players to stay alert as Melbourne City are a stronger and more complete side than last season. He said JDT must remain ambitious, stay true to their playing identity and be prepared for Melbourne’s intensity and physical duels. Meanwhile, Melaka FC head coach K. Devan admitted that defensive mistakes in the second half were the main reason for their heavy defeat. He said despite conceding two early goals, Melaka defended well in the first half, but their failure to read JDT’s one
touch movements after the break led to three quick goals and a difficult second half. Devan added that Melaka’s priority this season is to remain in the Super League. And the team is in the process of bringing in new foreign players, including from Africa, Colombia, Japan and Korea, to strengthen the squad in the second transfer window. The home team made an aggressive start right from the kickoff, attacking the visitors’ defence before opening the scoring in the sixth minute through defender Jonathan Silva, who finished off a pass from Mohd Afiq Fazail with a clean strike. JDT continued to add to their tally in the 32nd minute after sensational striker Bergson Silva headed in a free kick taken by Oscar Arribas. As the match entered the second half, JDT continued to dominate the game, scoring two goals to leave Melaka FC far behind. Substitute Heberty Fernandes contributed the third goal in the 48th minute from a through ball by Jairo Da Silva, while Teto Martin added JDT’s fourth goal in the 50th minute. Silva adding JDT’s fifth goal with an easy finish and Teto Martin scored the sixth after receiving a neat pass from Fernandes. The visiting team managed to surprise JDT when substitute Abdul Azim Rahim scored their first goal in the 86th minute but the joy was short-lived as JDT immediately widened the gap through Fernandes, who converted a free-kick, securing a 7-1 victory. With this win, JDT has now accumulated 30 points from 10 matches. – Bernama
