I T can be easy to overlook the rich tap estry of talent that thrives within our own borders. Yet amid fast fashion, mass production and algorithm fed content, a growing number of Malaysians are choosing to sapot lokal – supporting homegrown artists, makers and visionaries who infuse their craft with Threading heritage through jewellery: Manikam Si Bangsawan (@ manikamsibangsawan) Founded by a medical professional who uses drawing as an escape and prefers to remain mysterious, Mani kam si Bangsawan is a contemporary jewellery label that features accesso ries with timeless designs and natural stones, creating pieces steeped in memory and meaning. Many of the works echo elements of their Malay roots, often reworking forgotten heir looms into wearable art inspired by Mahsuri and women. Apart from the usual necklaces, bracelets, rings and pendants, Manikam si Bangsawan also offers beautifully embellished phone casings.

Artistic storytelling in playful shapes: Chauxhien (@chauxhien) Venice Foo, also known as Chau Xhien, is a full-time artist based in North Borneo whose work spans paintings, needlework and hand-poked tattoos, all infused with the vibrant intricacy of a maximalist aesthetic. Since beginning as a muralist in 2015, she has explored a wide range of creative practices – from portrait drawing and crochet to embroidery, beading and weaving – consistently merging detail with playfulness.
