India win maiden Women’s WC title INDIA’S agonising wait for a maiden Women’s World Cup title finally came to an end as Harmanpreet Kaur and her teary-eyed teammates clinched the tro phy by beating South Africa in a dramatic final at the DY Patil Stadium yesterday. Their 52-run victory before a full house was the perfect culmination of a cam paign, which was nearly derailed after three defeats in a row, including one against South Africa, in the league phase. Harmanpreet’s team pulled off a record chase in their semifinal against defending champions Australia to reach the final against a South Africa side also gunning for their maiden 50-over World Cup title. India found an unlikely hero in opener Shafali Verma, whose whirlwind 87 was key to their total of 298-7 even though 350 looked within their reach at one stage. Verma also had a golden arm, claiming two quick wickets that turned the match on its head after South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt (101) led their robust reply with her second successive hundred of the tournament. Verma walked away with the player-of the-match award in the final of a tourna ment where she was drafted in only before the knockout stage as a late injury replacement. Deepti Sharma was equally impressive, smashing a run-a-ball 58 and following it with figures of 5-39. The 28-year-old finished the World Cup with 22 wickets and 215 runs, which earned her the player-of-the-tournament award. Wolvaardt kept South Africa, who were all out for 246 in the 46th over, in the chase but once she holed out in the deep, India took charge of the contest. India opener Smriti Mandhana, their leading scorer in the tournament, summed up the feeling in their camp after they clinched victory following two previ ous final defeats. “It’s still sinking in. I haven’t been emo tional on a cricket field but just an unreal night,” she said battling tears. “To be the champions, I’m not able to process it. “Every World Cup we go in, there have been so many heartbreaks but we always believe we have a responsibility with women’s cricket and to see the last month and a half and the way we’ve been sup ported … I will take that 45 days of not sleeping every night.” Wolvaardt finished as the tourna ment’s leading scorer but found little joy in personal milestones. “I couldn’t be prouder of this team for the campaign that we’ve had,” the opener said. “We’ve played some brilliant cricket throughout but we were outplayed today, India played fantastically well. “We had a lot of different players step ping up, it was an amazing tournament for a lot of players. I’m just proud of the resil ience we showed to get to the final.” – Reuters until after midnight local time. “India could become a juggernaut of women’s cricket, it’s scary where they could get to,” former England spinner Alex Hartley told BBC Test Match Special . “The money that’s going to be pumped into the game, the domestic system, more and more people are going to want to be like Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma. There’ll be more and more young girls and boys picking up bats to play cricket because of what India have just achieved,” Hartley added. – AFP/Agencies

improve,” Auger-Aliassime told Sinner. Despite being unable to add a fourth title to his list of achievements so far this season, the 25-year-old has enjoyed a renaissance in 2025 and cemented his place back amongst the world’s top 10. “It was difficult on the court, having to sit there rethinking a few points,” Auger-Aliassime said. “Having to just accept that the match is over. “Missing long at deuce at 5-4. It’s unfortunate, but I have to move on and focus on the positive.” While Auger-Aliassime waits to see if he has done enough to reach the ATP Finals, defending champion Sinner heads into the Nov 9-16 event knowing the title of year-end No. 1 is up for grabs between him and Alcaraz. “It’s not only in my hands,” the Italian said. “In Turin … I just play the best possible tennis I can, and if it’s not gonna be, it’s not gonna be.” – AFP

four-time Grand Slam champion reclaimed his position atop the world rankings. The 24-year-old’s maiden crown in Paris, coupled with incumbent world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain crashing out early in the tournament, will see Sinner return to the pinnacle of men’s tennis when the ATP rankings are updated overnight. The Italian first claimed the No. 1 ranking in June last year and held it for 65 weeks until he lost the US Open title-match to Alcaraz in September. Reclaiming top spot from his rival in Paris will taste even sweeter for Sinner after he went down in a remarkable five-set final to Alcaraz at Roland Garros earlier in the season. “I’m of course happy,” Sinner said. “I knew from the beginning of the

“Every title you have, it’s special on its own. Every one is in different cir cumstances. Some you feel great throughout the whole week. Some you struggle a little bit more,” Sinner added. For Canadian ninth seed Auger Aliassime, defeat at the last hurdle in the French capital prevented him from sewing up his spot at the ATP Finals later this month. Auger-Aliassime is, however, favourite to claim the eighth and final berth for the season-ending tourna ment as his run to the title-match leapfrogged him ahead of Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the race to Turin. “It’s never easy to lose a final but … You push me and all other players to

ARYNA SABALENKA kicked off her quest for a maiden WTA Finals title by blasting 11 aces on her way to a 6 3, 6-1 victory over Jasmine Paolini in Riyadh yesterday. The world No. 1 was at her serving best, landing a remarkable 81% of her first serves in during the 70-min ute contest to shoot to the summit of the Stefanie Graf Group. “That felt super special, of course I’m super happy and super proud of the work that has been done and that things are working and I’m get ting better and better every day,” said the four-time Grand Slam cham pion. “She’s a tough opponent, we played a lot and every time it’s a tough battle, doesn’t matter what the score is, I always have to stay focused,” said Sabalenka of the eighth-seeded Italian. “I think I’m mostly happy with my focus today. I was calm and it felt like everything was in control.” Later at King Saud University Indoor Arena, Coco Gauff got her title defence campaign off to a rocky start as she double-faulted 17 times

in her 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 defeat by her fellow American Jessica Pegula. In a rematch of their Wuhan final from three weeks ago, fifth-seeded Pegula avenged her loss to the world No. 3, outlasting Gauff in a topsy turvy battle. The match witnessed a whopping 14 breaks of serve. Gauff particularly struggled on her second serve, win ning just 28% of the points behind that shot, and her forehand leaked a

worrying 45 unforced errors. “Coco’s a great champion, great competitor, great friend. She was the last person I played in China. I tried my best today to just execute what I could,” said Pegula. “I’m accustomed to those (wild matches) at the end of the year. I’ve played a lot of three sets lately. I just focused on my strategy and I was very disciplined in that in the third set.” – AFP

The Indian women triumphed at the third attempt after finishing runners-up in 2005 and 2017. Harmanpreet’s ploy of giving the ball to Verma, a part-time off spinner, in the 20th over proved key as the youngster removed Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp. The skipper said the decision to hand Verma, who was named player of the match, the ball proved to be the “turning point” of the game, which did not finish
