Malaysia’s WonderBrew wins big on global stage

CAB Cakaran set to kick-start Indonesia operations in tie-up with Salim Group PETALING JAYA: After an eight year delay, CAB Cakaran Corporation Bhd, one of Malaysia’s largest food producers, is finally kick-starting its Indonesian operations with partner Salim Group, Indonesia’s biggest conglomerate, and this will be implemented by the second quarter of 2026. In a filing to Bursa Malaysia, CAB Cakaran said that after several years of delay in implementation due to the Covid 19 pandemic as well as awaiting for clear policy guidelines following the change in government in Indonesia, the joint venture (JV) partners have agreed to adopt a new five-year business plan, of which phase one involves an investment of US$10 million (RM42 million) for the setting up of a food processing plant, excluding cost of land and factory building, which will be leased. The five-year business plan will cover the implementation of the fully integrated poultry business in Indonesia. For context, Cabindo Poultry Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of CAB Cakaran, entered into a joint venture agreement with PT Ternak Ayam Terpadu Indonesia (TAT) to establish several joint venture companies on Nov 1, 2017. TAT is a unit of Salim Group. The objective of the joint venture is to combine the resources and expertise of both parties to produce halal poultry products for the Indonesian consumer market. With the joint venture, CAB has both a local partner in Indonesia, and a ready customer base for its products. Within the food industry, Salim’s assets include Indomaret, Indonesia’s largest convenience store chain with 22,400 outlets, Indofood Sukses Makmur, the world’s largest instant noodle producer, and Bogasari, Indonesia’s biggest flour miller. It does not have poultry operations. Furthermore, the opportunity in Indonesia is huge by virtue of the huge Indonesian population and the present low chicken consumption per capita there. Besides the food industry, Salim Group is also engaged in businesses spanning various industries, including finance, retail, telecommunications, automotive and real estate. It owns four public-listed companies in Indonesia, France and Hong Kong. Salim Group owns 15.2% equity interest in CAB through Plant Wealth Holdings Ltd.
