Last hurrah Rohit, Virat bid likely farewell to Australia as winners R OHIT SHARMA and Virat Kohli turned back the clock with a 168-run stand in what could be their Australian swansongs as “You know, a lot of good memories, bad memories. But all in all, I’ll take the cricket that I played here.” India made a confident start to the chase after Mitchell Marsh won the toss and batted first only for Australia to be bowled out for 236.
Sinner sets up Vienna showdown with Zverev
TOP SEED Jannik Sinner crushed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4 yestreday to reach the Vienna Open final for the second time, where he will face second seed Alexander Zverev for the title in a battle between two former champions. Sinner’s dominant victory – his 50th over a fellow top-10 player – extended his streak to 20 consecu tive wins on indoor hardcourts as he moved into his eighth final of the season. “(I) came here quite late to the tournament, tried to take every day in the best possible way and I’m happy to be here in the final. It was not easy to (reach) the final here,” said Sinner. “The first set was very physical, so I’m happy that I won in two sets today. He changed a couple of things, which I was ready for today.” Vienna champion in 2023, Sinner came out of the blocks fast, racing through the opening four games and breaking twice to establish a 4-0 lead in 15 minutes. Third seed De Minaur man aged to win only four points before the Australian finally got on the scoreboard by breaking the top seed. As the crowd roared its appre ciation for the underdog, Sinner seemed to take his foot off the gas, but any hopes of a revival were dashed at 5-3 when the Italian unleashed a searing forehand past De Minaur before wrapping up
the opening set.
De Minaur showed more fight in the second set as the pair traded breaks, but Sinner’s power and precision proved too much as he broke again to lead 4-3, with the Australian having no answer to the top seed’s relentless pressure. The writing was on the wall when De Minaur sat stone-faced on his chair during a changeover at 5-4 and Sinner duly served out to love to extend his perfect record to 12-0 against the Australian. Zverev, the 2021 champion, beat fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 7-5, firing nine aces as he racked up his 300th hardcourt win. The German had lost his last three matches against Musetti but this time was well in control as he reached his first final since Stuttgart in June. Musetti threatened to level the match in the second set when he went 5-4 up but the German held his serve. Zverev then made the crucial break before serving for the match, sealing his place in the final with an ace. Zverev will be meeting Sinner for the first time since the Italian beat him in straight sets in the Australian Open final. “It’s going to be a great chal lenge,” Zverev said. “Playing one of the two best players in the world, seeing where my level really is.” – Reuters
39 while Matt Renshaw top-scored with 56. Marsh and Travis Head made a watchful start but once they got their eye in the runs started flowing. Head looked dangerous, hitting six fours in reaching 29 off 25 balls, passing 3,000 one-day runs en route. But he failed to control a cut shot off Mohammed Siraj and was caught at backward point. Marsh was bowled for 41, con founded by the spin of Axar Patel, and when Matt Short (30) fell to Washington Sundar Australia were 124-3 after 23 overs. Shreyas Iyer pulled off a sensational backpeddling catch to remove Alex Carey (24) and it sparked a collapse. Renshaw reached a maiden ODI half century, but with the runs drying up he charged at Sundar and was trapped lbw, before Mitchell Owen departed for one and Mitchell Starc for two leaving Australia in trouble at 201-7. Cooper Connolly made a late 23 but the tail failed to wag. – AFP
India thrashed the hosts by nine wickets in the third one-day international on Saturday. Chasing a modest 237 to win, the visi tors reached their target easily with 69 balls to spare at a sold-out Sydney Cricket Ground. Rohit top-scored with an unbeaten 121, but the biggest roar was for Virat, who made ducks in the first two games won by Australia at Adelaide and Perth which clinched them the series. This time he was back to his best with a fluent 74 not out. Like Rohit, he has retired from Test and T20 duties and with no more ODI series scheduled Down Under before the 2027 World Cup it was almost certainly their final innings on Australian soil. “I don’t know if we’ll be coming back to Australia, but it was fun all these years that we played here,” said the 38-year-old Rohit.
Rohit and Shubman Gill put on 69 before Josh Hazlewood enticed a faint edge from the Indian captain. That brought the 36-year-old Virat to the crease and he and Rohit set about knocking off the runs quickly. “Going out there and having a situa tion is always something that brings the best out of me and when Rohit is batting it’s pretty easy to kind of rotate the strike, we know each other’s game pretty well,” said Virat. “We want to say thank you, we’ve loved coming to this country,” he added. “We’ve played some of our best cricket here so thank you very much.” Earlier, Australia were ticking along nicely at 183-3 but lost their last seven wickets for just 53. BRAZILIAN Joao Fonseca (pix) overcame Spain’s Jaume Munar 7-6(4), 7-5 yesterday to reach his first ATP 500 final at the Swiss Indoors Championships in Basel, setting up a title clash with eighth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Playing in his second tour-level semifinal of the year, the 19-year old Fonseca hammered down eight aces and struck 39 winners during the contest. “I knew that it was going to be a tough match, Jaume is playing (well) on this surface,” said world number 46 Fonseca. “He’s putting a lot of pressure and you need to defend a lot of the time. “I don’t like playing against those guys because I like to play aggressive and go for winners. “I’m happy with how I stayed mentally after an early break in the second set. I’m very happy, so let’s stay hyped for the final.” The opening set was closely contested, with little to separate the pair before Fonseca edged ahead in the tiebreak, clinching a teenager
4-3 lead and eventually taking the set. Munar, 28, began the second set brightly, racing to a 4-2 advan tage, but Fonseca showed resil ience to level the score at 4-4. The youngster then claimed three of the next four games to seal the vic tory and advance to the final. Fonseca, who is chasing his second tour-level title after lifting his maiden trophy in Buenos Aires in February, could break into the Top-30 for the first time if he defeats Davidovich Fokina in the overnight showdown. “It’s been an amazing year, starting at No. 130 in the world, now 40-something and into a first ATP 500 final,” Fonseca said. “We didn’t go to Asia this year, I was a little bit sick. I was working with my mentality and I’m getting the opportunities … I’m just very happy to be here.” In the second semifinal, Spain’s Davidovich Fokina advanced to his fourth final of the season after Frenchman Ugo Humbert retired while trailing 7-6(4), 3-1. – Reuters

It looks like a nightmare fac ing him. Obviously long spells, but we knew wick ets were massive
