KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to elevate its defence ties with South Korea into a strategic and practical industry partnership, reflecting both nations’ shared commitment to peace, security and technological advancement, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said the Malaysia–South Korea partnership, which has steadily grown in strength and significance, has now reached a milestone with the decision to deepen defence and security cooperation, including closer industry collaboration and the tackling of non-traditional threats such as cybercrime. “Malaysia is ready to learn from South Korea’s expertise, embrace technology transfer and pursue co development and co-production,”he said in his keynote address at the Malaysia-Korea Third Defence Industry Cooperation seminar yesterday. Present were Korean ambassador to Malaysia Yeo Sung-Bae and Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman Kwon Dae Won. Mohamed Khaled said Malaysia regards South Korea as a trusted friend and capable partner, citing Seoul’s world-class defence industry

spanning aerospace, surveillance, cyber defence and advanced manufacturing. “Dialogue alone is not enough. This is the moment to act – from goodwill to outcome, from mere partnership to constructive progress. Malaysia believes that with Korea’s guidance and friendship, our defence industry will transform aspiration into achievement.” He added that the partnership is timely, given the rapidly evolving security landscape where threats extend beyond conventional domains into cyberspace, outer space and the electromagnetic spectrum. “When we succeed, our collaboration will not only strengthen national security but also contribute to peace and stability in the wider region.” Mohamed Khaled said Malaysia is expediting a government-to government procurement agreement with South Korea, which is expected to be tabled for Cabinet approval by October. He said once endorsed, South Korea would become the second country after Turkiye to formalise such an exclusive arrangement with Malaysia. – Bernama

He said the OSA initiative provides non-lethal defence equipment to partner countries, with Malaysia joining the Philippines, Bangladesh and Fiji as this year’s recipients. “The close ties between Malaysia and Japan are no longer confined to traditional areas but now extend into defence. Cheaper fuel for M’sians from Sept 30

o In bold move to cut petrol prices amid global uncertainty, govt trims RON95 to RM1.99 per litre through targeted subsidy, citing efficiency gains and stronger revenue collection

Ű BY HARITH KAMAL newsdesk@thesundaily.com

Sept 28. From Sept 30, the subsidy opens to the wider public – 16 million Malaysians aged 16 and above with a MyKad and valid driving licence. The government has also set a monthly eligibility ceiling of 300 litres for all citizens. However, e-hailing drivers are exempted from this limit and may apply for higher allocations according to their needs. Foreign-registered vehicles, meanwhile, are only allowed to fill up with RON97, while foreigners using locally registered plate numbers can purchase RON95 at the unsubsidised price of RM2.60, as the subsidy is reserved for Malaysians with a valid driving licence. For recipients of Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara), verification for Budi Madani RON95 will also be linked to MyKad. Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s competitive fuel prices internationally, noting that even among oil-producing nations, the country maintains some of the lowest fuel costs. “We are the only country in the world bold enough to lower petrol prices amid an uncertain economy,” he said, citing comparison with Saudi Arabia where subsidies amount to RM0.50 per litre making the current price there RM2.61 per litre. Among neighbouring countries, he said, Malaysia remains one of the cheapest, with only Brunei slightly lower. Anwar framed the subsidy within the government’s broader Madani vision of civil society, which emphasises effective governance at all levels. He acknowledged that initial implementation may face minor

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians will soon pay less at the pump. From Sept 30, the price of RON95 petrol drops from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre – a rare move in today’s uncertain economy. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the cut comes under the government’s Budi Madani RON95 subsidy scheme, designed to ease household costs while keeping public funds in check. “This policy is possible due to improved efficiency, better revenue collection and the reduction of leakages such as through smuggling and tax evasion, ensuring greater benefits are returned to the people,” Anwar said during the Prime Minister’s Department’s monthly assembly with staff. Budi Madani RON95 applies only to Malaysian citizens. “Foreigners and large companies are not eligible and will pay RM2.60 per litre. “Citizens need only present a valid MyKad and driving licence to enjoy the subsidy, with no further registration required,” Anwar said, adding that the rollout will be staggered to avoid congestion. Police and military personnel get first dibs on Sept 27, followed by B40 households and selected M40 recipients of the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) scheme on

Mixed reactions as citizens weigh impact of price cut

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians have largely welcomed the government’s move to lower RON95 petrol prices from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre, but reactions are mixed on whether the six-sen cut will meaningfully ease house hold expenses. The reduction, introduced under the Budi Madani RON95 targeted subsidy, applies only to Malaysian citizens. For operations executive Nur Qalbi Ruslan, 39, the savings are noticeable but limited. “I support the government lowering the price, but for me, it doesn’t make much difference because the reduction is only six sen per litre. “If divided by 300 litres per month, that’s only about RM18 in savings. Meanwhile, other taxes imposed by

on overall household spending,” he said, strongly supporting the citizen only policy. However, he noted the system’s vulnerabilities. “The likelihood of losing a wallet or MyKad increases. Additionally, the system can ‘go down’ unexpectedly. I hope the government, petrol stations and other relevant stakeholders have prepared a mitigation plan before fully implementing this redemption system.” While many welcome the price cut as a gesture to ease financial burden, the feedback highlights lingering concerns over its practical impact, the adequacy of the 300 litre cap and the reliability of a MyKad-based redemption system. – By HARITH KAMAL

Malaysians, he agreed it was fair. “The money from subsidies comes from the nation’s funds, so logically only citizens should benefit. Foreigners can still buy fuel, just not at the subsidised price – same as with RON97,” he said, adding that MyKad is convenient so long as it works reliably. “Everyone already has a MyKad, so there’s no need to install apps. But if the card suddenly can’t be scanned at the petrol station, that would be troublesome. Senior citizens may also struggle with the technology.” For analyst Muhammad Danish Afwan, 25, the subsidy could help lower household costs but comes with risks. “This reduction can help lower household expenses. I feel that this move is likely to have a positive impact

“For me personally, 300 litres is enough since I only use the car for commuting and daily errands. But my husband travels long distances frequently for work, so for him it’s definitely not enough. In the end, fuel expenses still weigh heavily on our family budget,” she said. On the use of MyKad for subsidy redemption, Tina described it as practical but warned of potential glitches at petrol stations. Azmin (not his real name) took a more positive view, noting that even small savings can add up for commuters. “Even though the difference looks small, over time it can still save some money. Hopefully in the future, the price can be reduced further,” he said. On subsidies being limited to

the government amount to more than RM18,” she said. Nur Qalbi also flagged the 300-litre monthly cap as a challenge. “For my family, 300 litres per month is not enough. Usually, we use 500 to 600 litres per month, including interstate travel as well as outstation trips for work,” she said. She added that relying on the MyKad system could be problematic. “It’s troublesome because the system may experience downtime, which makes it difficult to purchase subsidised petrol. On top of that, misuse of MyKad and data leaks can also easily happen.” Tina Majid, 54, a logistics manager, said the 300-litre cap works for her household but is limiting for her husband.

Over RM70m invested in mangrove conservation TUMPAT: The government has allocated over RM71 million since 2006 for the planting and maintenance of mangrove trees and other suitable species nationwide, said Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Johari said the allocation covers research and development, monitoring and public awareness programmes. “Up to this month, 3,820ha of coastal and mangrove forest areas have been planted with over nine million mangrove trees and other suitable species along the country’s coastline. “This achievement is supported by more than 120 research studies that serve as key references, along with the active involvement of 13 NGOs and local communities,” he said in a speech read by Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability secretary-general Datuk Dr Ching Too Kim at the National Celebration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem and the National Social Forestry Carnival 2025 on Sunday. Johari said the initiative not only strengthens efforts to preserve mangrove forests and coastal areas but also creates economic opportunities for local communities. He highlighted notable successes of the programme, including the mangrove planting initiative at Delta Kelantan, Pantai Senok, which has developed into an eco-tourism destination, and the charcoal industry in Larut, Matang and Selama, Perak, which continues to contribute to the national economy. “In addition, research and learning centres in Kuala Selangor, as well as new economic opportunities in Pulau Ketam, Perlis and three areas in Sarawak, have been gazetted as fully protected zones, generating over RM3 million annually. “In Sabah, the areas planted since 2006 have become a vital source of seafood for local communities.” Johari emphasised that the government will continue its sustainable mangrove and coastal forest conservation efforts. – Bernama Sabah tops with over 2,300 places of worship, says chief minister TUARAN: Sabah has the highest number of mosques in the country with 1,127, alongside 1,222 surau statewide, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He stressed the figure was not a boast, but a reflection of the state government’s commitment, together with the Muslim community, to strengthen Islamic teachings and position houses of worship as hubs for the development of the ummah (Muslim community at large). “What matters most is ensuring these places of worship are enriched with activities in knowledge, dakwah (preaching), education and unity, so they are recognised not just by name but by their achievements,” he said in a statement after opening the Abu Hassan Ar-Raudhah Surau. The new surau adds to Tuaran district’s tally of 69 Islamic places of worship, comprising 38 surau and 31 mosques, in line with the population growth and rapid development of the district neighbouring Kota Kinabalu. “The government is confident this number will continue to grow in step with Tuaran’s rapid progress.” Hajiji also thanked the Bugis community for playing a central role in building the new surau through cooperation, gotong-royong and community donations. He added mosques and surau also help to strengthen brotherhood, unite communities, spread knowledge and foster social and economic development. – Bernama

BALIK PULAU: Pulau Betong is getting more than just a facelift – it is being turned into a model village under the government’s Kampung Angkat Madani initiative, with 23 projects set to revamp facilities, brighten up community spaces and give its eco-tourism appeal a serious boost. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the programme aims to close the gap between urban and rural communities by upgrading basic amenities in villages. “We focus on what can be improved so that people in villages have the essential infrastructure they need,” he told a press conference at the Pulau Betong fishermen’s jetty. Unlike conventional development projects managed centrally, Kampung Angkat Madani puts villagers at the heart of planning. “What’s important is that we do it with the cooperation of the local community. We listen to what they feel is most urgent and we prioritise those projects first.” He explained that this bottom-up approach involves not just federal ministries but also state agencies, local authorities and villagers themselves, ensuring projects are more responsive to local needs. Pulau Betong, home to 1,200 residents (90% Malay and 10% Chinese), relies on fishing, farming and small industries. Government assessments found its facilities in need of urgent attention, while its eco tourism potential remains largely untapped. “Pulau Betong has many attractions that can draw visitors. “Beyond infrastructure, we want to create o Revamp under Kampung Angkat with 23 projects to upgrade facilities, boost eco-tourism and create more income opportunities for locals: Minister Ű BY T.C. The finance ministry is coordinating the Pulau Betong project with the Southwest District and Land Office in Balik Pulau and the Prime Minister’s Department’s Implementation Coordination Unit. Nationwide, the initiative covers 200 villages under Budget 2025, with a total allocation of RM200 million. Amir stressed the initiative is not just about upgrading facilities but also about shaping future opportunities. “The spillover we want is not only better infrastructure but also chances for people here to do business and improve their livelihoods.” Also present were Balik Pulau MP Datuk Muhamad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, Pulau Betong assemblyman Datuk Mat Tuah Ismail and officials from the finance ministry.

Amir said growth in tourism can spill over into more income opportunities for locals. By end-2025, 23 projects will be completed in Pulau Betong, including upgrades to Surau Al-Hidayah, Masjid Ar-Raudhah, the village hall and library, as well as improvements to roads, parking areas and the jetty. Several community spaces are also being upgraded, such as the Dataran Kuala Pulau Betong recreational area, jetty toilets, the riverside at Kuala Sungai Betong and the village cemetery, which will soon feature floodlights and beautification works. A new hawker centre and tourism-themed sculptures are also planned to make the village more welcoming to visitors. ‘Stronger foresight needed in land management’ PUTRAJAYA: Land administrators and officers at all levels must handle their responsibilities with greater care and strategic foresight, as land issues in Malaysia are becoming increasingly complex, said Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Acting Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. now escalated into serious flashpoints. “Take the redevelopment of PKNS flats in Kampung Baru, for example. Previously, there were no major disputes over land status. But now, the Kampung Sungai Baru issue has become a major point of contention,” he said when officiating at the 9th National Land Day celebration yesterday. developers, it creates confusion, especially when there’s no clear distinction between Malay reserve land, ordinary land, freehold and leasehold status. This is something we must rectify. The government must lead the narrative, not developers or politicians,” he said.

Johari also underlined the need to strengthen federal-state collaboration in land governance to avoid overlapping policies and costly project delays. “In the past, we didn’t face such issues. But now, after 68 years of independence, the structure and governance at state level have evolved. Many state-managed policies may no longer align with the federal government’s direction. “This is something we must take seriously. Even if certain problems haven’t surfaced yet, they may become future challenges. As we move forward, we must remain vigilant.” – Bernama

Johari, who is also the Plantation and Commodities Minister, stressed that Malaysia’s land management now demands a forward looking approach that hinges on closer federal-state cooperation to ensure land, as a national asset, is managed strategically, efficiently and inclusively. “In the past, we may have taken land matters lightly. But today the country is moving forward. We need to be more focused and proactive in dealing with challenges we have never faced before.” Citing the Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment dispute, Johari noted that land matters once considered straightforward have

Johari said the lack of consensus in Kampung Sungai Baru has stalled developers, while political sentiments have fuelled tensions, requiring the involvement of enforcement agencies such as the police and Federal Reserve Unit during recent disputes. Decomposed body of missing man found MIRI: A 77-year-old man, who had been missing for more than a week, was found dead in a decomposed state in the Sebubok area, Batu Niah on Sunday night. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement that the body of Chong Nyuk Fan was discovered near his abandoned four-wheel drive vehicle. The department received a report of his disappearance at 9.18pm and firefighters together with police arrived at the scene at 9.44pm. “A search was conducted within a 50-metre radius of the victim’s vehicle, and within 20 minutes the victim was found in a patch of tall grass by the roadside in a decomposed state,” the statement said. According to a police report lodged by the victim’s family, Chong had left his home in the Senadin area on Sept 14 in his four-wheel drive vehicle without informing anyone. A GPS check later revealed that the vehicle had travelled from Miri to Belaga on Sept 14 before heading towards the Batu Niah junction on Sept 17, which was the last recorded location. Of this, RM705.55 million was confiscated in operations targeting corruption and money laundering since 2024. “In the same period, 61 individuals were arrested, including 34 civil servants. “Of these, 25 have been charged in court, while disciplinary action has been taken against another eight,” he said. Canines show off prowess on ‘graduation day’

o Dogs display speed and agility at obstacle course before receiving certificates,

production ran for three days until yesterday as a heartfelt tribute to her lifelong artistic journey. Singer-actress Amy Mastura provided one of the most memorable moments, recalling Rosminah’s unconventional teaching style. “Cik Ros had her own way. If we weren’t focused, she’d aim her shoe at us. She’d shout, ‘Keep going, no need to read the script, such a waste of time!’ and then burst out laughing as if nothing had happened. “Her strictness scared us, but she was easy to please. She might scold us, yet she was also the first to sit with us and laugh together. That was Cik Ros – tough on the outside, but full of love inside,” Amy said, drawing laughter from the audience. Actor Ijat Ashari spoke of the pressures of their four-legged classmates. The day opened with a canine agility demo that had tails wagging and jaws dropping. From tunnels to weave poles, from hurdles to hairpin turns, the dogs raced through the obstacle course with speed, precision and plenty of flair. It was a showcase of teamwork and trust that left the audience cheering, and maybe wishing they could train their pets to fetch slippers with that kind of dedication. Once the applause faded, it was time for the serious stuff – certificates and prizes. Malaysian National Animal Welfare Foundation chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Nordin Mohd Nor, joined by senior officials from the Veterinary Services Department, handed out awards to proud graduates. His message struck a chord with the crowd. “This graduation is about celebrating the special bond between dogs and their owners. We hope the lessons learnt have equipped you for your journey as responsible pet parents,”

Come to rehearsal unprepared and you’d surely get it from her. But those shouts weren’t empty, they came from love and her desire for us to take things seriously. I miss hearing them,” she said. Thousands evacuated in Philippines as typhoon nears

Hong Kong airport to shut for 36 hours HONG KONG: Hong Kong International Airport will suspend all passenger flights for 36 hours from this evening, said Qantas Airways, as the Asian financial hub prepares for one of its strongest super typhoons in years. Hong Kong’s airport would be closed from 8pm (1200 GMT) today to 8am on Thursday, said Qantas Airways, adding that it would contact affected customers. An Airport Authority Hong Kong spokesperson said it is closely monitoring the developments regarding Super Typhoon Ragasa and has commenced preparations to deal with the storm. It has not made an official announcement on the closure. The Hong Kong Observatory said it would issue the lowest typhoon signal at noon yesterday, upgrading it to the second highest last night between 8pm and 10pm. The weather is expected to deteriorate rapidly from today and gale-force to storm-force winds would impact the densely populated city tomorrow, with winds expected to reach hurricane force offshore and on high ground. The Civil Aviation Department did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. – Reuters Jakarta, S’pore probe baby trafficking ring JAKARTA: Indonesia’s police are working with Singapore police to probe a cross-border baby trafficking ring uncovered in West Java, officials said. The joint investigation, coordinated through Interpol’s National Central Bureau in Jakarta, was launched after authorities discovered a smuggling route linking Bandung, Pontianak and Jakarta to Singapore. They are tracing the trafficking flow abroad, said Bureau Secretary Brigadier-General Untung Widyatmoko. “Singapore will question witnesses, with queries prepared by West Java investigators and channelled through Jakarta’s Interpol office. “Singapore has also agreed to assist in locating three Singaporean nationals suspected of involvement,” he said, adding that investigators have been advised to review national identity data of couriers believed to have escorted babies to Singapore. In July, West Java police named 22 suspects, accusing them of trafficking at least 25 babies, 15 of whom had been sent to Singapore under the guise of adoption. West Java Police Criminal Investigation Director Commissioner Surawan said each infant was sold for about SGD$20,000 (RM65,534), covering delivery costs, infant care and profits, Bernama reported. The suspects face charges under Indonesia’s 2007 anti-human trafficking law.

MANILA: More than 10,000 evacuees sheltered in schools and evacuation centres in the Philippines yesterday as heavy rains and gale-force winds from Super Typhoon Ragasa lashed the country’s far north. The typhoon, which gained strength as it proceeded on a collision course with southern China, was expected to make landfall over the Philippines’s Babuyan Islands at around midday. The sparsely populated islands lie about 740km south of Taiwan, where smaller-scale evacuations were also underway. As of 11am (0300 GMT), maximum sustained winds of 215kph were reported at the storm’s centre, with gusts reaching up to 265kph as it moved westward towards the Babuyans, the national weather service said. “I woke up because of the strong wind. It was hitting the windows and it sounded like a machine that was switched on,” said Tirso Tugagao, a resident of Aparri, a coastal town in northern Cagayan province. “I pray that everyone will be safe,” the 45-year-old teacher said. o President says monitoring situation and govt agencies on alert to give help anywhere needed

Government weather specialist John Grender Almario said on Sunday “severe flooding and landslides” could be expected in the northern areas of the main island Luzon. The Philippines is the first major landmass facing the Pacific cyclone belt and the archipelago is hit by an average of 20 storms and typhoons each year, putting millions of people in disaster-prone areas in a state of constant poverty. Scientists warn that storms are becoming more powerful as the world warms due to the effects of human-driven climate change. – AFP

“What worries us more is that the damage could be similar to what happened during Typhoon Koinu two years ago,” he added, describing a storm that saw utility poles collapse and sheet-metal roofs sent flying into the air. Schools and government offices were closed yesterday in the Manila region and across 29 Philippine provinces in anticipation of heavy rainfall. President Ferdinand Marcos said on Facebook he is closely monitoring the situation and all government agencies are “on alert to give help anywhere and whenever needed”.

Cagayan chief Rueli Rapsing told AFP that his team is prepared for “the worst”. In Taiwan, the state weather service predicted a chance of “extremely torrential rain” in the country’s east. “Its storm radius is quite large, about 320km. Although the typhoon’s centre is still some distance away, its wide, strong wind field and outer circulation are already affecting parts of Taiwan.” Local Fire Department officer James Wu told AFP that evacuations are ongoing in mountainous areas near Pingtung. disaster

Rage over the so-called ghost infrastructure projects has been mounting in the Southeast Asian country since President Ferdinand Marcos put them centre stage in a July state of the nation address after weeks of flooding. The Finance Department has estimated that the Philippine economy lost up to 118.5 billion pesos (RM8.74 billion) from 2023 to 2025 due to corruption in flood control projects. UK considers scrapping visa fees for top global talent

“He admits to having been there, he remembers being there with his brother, but then he has memory lapses.“ Lafolie says he was driving his brother to an appointment in the area on the day they crossed paths with Desnoix. He says he tried to stop his brother from harming the girl, prompting his brother to strike him repeatedly on the head, causing gaps in his memory. The investigation has ruled out the involvement of his brother, who died a few months before Lafolie’s arrest. – AFP Renowned French art centre shuts for five-year refit PARIS: Paris’s Pompidou Centre, which houses one of the world’s most significant modern art collections in one of the most celebrated modern buildings on the planet, shut itself to visitors yesterday for a major five-year overhaul estimated to cost almost EUR$500 million (RM2.47 billion). The museum, famed for its multicoloured exterior and exposed piping and escalators, draws millions of visitors every year to admire the architecture as much as the art. Designed by architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers as an open space for all, and named after former president Georges Pompidou, who died in office in 1974, the centre opened its doors in 1977. Its permanent collection closed for visitors in March, when specialists began to remove works from display, including paintings by the likes of Francis Bacon or Frida Kahlo and the sculptures of Marcel Duchamp. Temporary exhibitions have remained open and yesterday was the final day for visitors to see the last show, a retrospective of the German artist Wolfgang Tillmans, until the centre reopens around 2030. The museum will stay open exceptionally until 11pm (2100 GMT) with free entry, although it is also due to host a musical and artistic show from Oct 22 to 25 to mark a Paris contemporary art week. The state of Paris’s often-crowded cultural attractions has caused concern, with the head of the Louvre warning earlier this year that the world’s most-visited museum was suffering from water damage, poor maintenance and long queues. President Emmanuel Macron visited afterwards to promise that it would be “redesigned, restored and enlarged”, with a multi-year overhaul forecast to cost up to EUR$800 million. Asbestos removal, accessibility, security and a complete interior redesign are on the agenda for the major renovations at the Pompidou Centre. Improved climate protection with new waterproofing is also planned, aiming to “reduce energy bills by 40%,“ its president Laurent Le Bon told AFP. “We are keeping the exterior framework, but from the basement to the top floor, we are changing everything,“ he said. A huge terrace open to the public on the seventh floor will offer breathtaking views of Paris. “We hope that visitors would feel a bit (of) the same shock as when the centre opened in 1977.“ The total cost of the renovation is estimated at EUR$460 million, of which EUR$280 million would be financed by the French state. For the rest, “EUR$100 million has been secured and we are hopeful of finding the remaining EUR$80 within the next five years,“ said Le Bon. Saudi Arabia has chipped in with a EUR$50 million contribution. – AFP

LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is exploring proposals to abolish some visa fees for top global talent at a time when the United States has taken a tougher stance on immigration, the Financial Times reported yesterday. Starmer’s “global talent task force” is working on ideas to attract the world’s best scientists, academics and digital experts to the United Kingdom (UK) in a bid to drive economic growth, the report said, citing people briefed on the discussions inside Downing Street and the Treasury Department. The idea of cutting visa costs to zero is aimed at people who have attended the world’s top five universities or have won prestigious prizes, an official told the newspaper. According to the report, the reforms were being discussed in Downing Street and the department before the Trump administration announced its decision to impose a US$100,000 (RM421,000) fee for new H-1B visas, widely used by US tech companies, from Sunday. The general debate will take place from today until Saturday, and again on Sept 29. Yusuf said Reform’s proposals would “lead to hundreds of thousands of people having to apply and ultimately losing their settled status in the UK, which would be done on a staggered and orderly basis to allow businesses to train British workers to replace them”. The savings to the taxpayer would exceed £230 billion, he claimed. Farage said: “Welfare would end for everyone that is not a UK citizen. We would close the loopholes. Reform would ensure welfare is for UK citizens only. “We are cleaning up the mess of Boris Johnson. The Boriswave would bankrupt us. Reform would deal with Boriswave, the biggest betrayal of voters’ trust in modern times.” A government spokesperson said: “People here illegally rightly do not get anything from our benefits system. Foreign nationals usually have to wait five years to claim universal credit and we are looking at increasing this to 10 years. “We inherited a broken welfare system and spiralling benefits Bill. those pushing for changes to Britain’s high-end visa system, aiming to spur growth ahead of the Nov 26 Budget, a person involved in the UK discussions said. Britain’s global talent visa application costs £766 (RM4,347), with partners and children paying the same fee. The Treasury Department and Downing Street did not immediately respond to Reuters’s request for comment. In a separate development, Nigel Farage has said Reform UK would end the right of migrants to apply for permanent residency in the UK after five years, and force those who have settled status to reapply for a new stricter visa, reported PA Media/dpa news. He wants to abolish indefinite leave to remain (ILR), for which migrants can currently apply after five years, and force them to renew their visa every five years. Applicants would have to meet certain criteria, including a higher salary threshold and better standard of English. They would have to have lived in the UK for seven years, up from five, and there would be tighter restrictions on bringing spouses and children to the UK. The new visa would also prevent any access to benefits under the plans set out by Reform UK’s policy chief Zia Yusuf. Yusuf said: “We would abolish ILR altogether, including rescinding it retrospectively, and close all loopholes to ensure only UK citizens receive welfare or

Man goes on trial for cold-case murder of schoolgirl LILLE: A man accused of murdering a schoolgirl in northern France over three decades ago went on trial yesterday, in one of the country’s oldest cold cases to reach court in recent years. road leading to her high school in the town of Chateau-Thierry. Near her schoolbag were a nylon cord and a freshly picked rose. An autopsy revealed no signs of sexual assault. However, this changed in 2021. That year, new tests revealed that Lafolie’s DNA, taken a few months earlier in a domestic violence case, matched that found on a hairband Desnoix was wearing when she died.

The killing of 17-year-old Nadege Desnoix in 1994 in the Aisne region had for years remained unsolved until DNA evidence led to the arrest of Pascal Lafolie, now 58, in 2021. Lafolie faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted by the criminal court in the town of Laon. A verdict is expected tomorrow. In late May 1994, Desnoix’s stabbed body was discovered under some foliage on a side

Lafolie, who has previous convictions for rape and sexual assault, initially confessed to investigators during questioning. But he later retracted his statement and now says he is innocent. “His ability to remember is not complete. These events date back more than 30 years,“ his lawyer Justine Devred told AFP.

Investigators looked into numerous leads, including her boyfriend and notorious serial killer Michel Fourniret, but found no concrete evidence. Genetic evidence was discovered on Desnoix’s clothing but DNA databases of suspects and people convicted in other cases failed to find a conclusive match.
