Analyst expects Bursa to trade sideways with upside bias BURSA Malaysia is expected to continue moving sideways in the near term with an upside bias supported by sustained buying interest during market dips, an analyst said. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said such a consolidation pattern often precedes a more sustainable market climb, especially when fresh catalysts emerge. “In short, the index is consolidating for now, but the medium-term outlook remains positive with an upward bias. As such, we anticipate the FBM KLCI to trend within the range of 1,580-1,620 points (this week),” he told Bernama. Bursa Malaysia was closed on Sept 15, which was an additional public holiday in conjunction with Malaysia Day on Sept 16. During the shortened trading week, the market ended mixed on profit-taking due to a lack of fresh catalysts. Last Friday, Bursa Malaysia ended on a slightly weaker note, remaining below the 1,600-point psychological level amid a lack of fresh leads. However, market breadth was positive, with gainers leading decliners 565 to 492, while 482 counters were unchanged, 1,109 untraded and 13 suspended. Berjaya Research Sdn Bhd head of research Kenneth Leong said on Friday mild selling pressure in selected banking heavyweight stocks also weighed on the benchmark index. He reckoned that the key index might attempt to build a base at around the 1,600-point level before resuming its recovery path towards the immediate resistance level at 1,611 points, followed by 1,620 points. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the FBM KLCI eased 1.90 points to 1,598.23 from 1,600.13. Weekly turnover narrowed to 9.29 billion units worth RM9.85 billion from 12.52 billion units worth RM11.25 billion.
