Heavyweight boxing great Bugner dies aged 75
Ű BY ALEX PATTLE
“RIP Joe Bugner just heard sad news of the passing of Joe,”tweeted Bruno. “We spent quite a bit of time together around the time of my fight with him. He was a character and played Mr Bad Guy when we did the promotion for the fight.” Meanwhile, British promoter Frank Warren tweeted:“Sad news to hear of the passing of Joe Bugner, former British, European and Commonwealth Champion, and a man who went the distance with both Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. “He also participated in the first fight I did on ITV – a great man who will be missed. I’m sending my regards to his family. May he rest in peace.” Bugner is also known for appearing in the 1994 action film Street Fighter, in which he starred alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme. He was an expert adviser on 2005’s The Cinderella Man , a movie about heavyweight legend James J Braddock, but upon being dropped from the project, he called star Russell Crowe “a gutless worm and a f*****g girl”. – The Independent
HEAVYWEIGHT boxing legend Joe Bugner has died at the age of 75. In a remarkable 32-year profes sional career, the Hungarian-born British-Australian fought the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Earnie Shavers, Henry Cooper, Ron Lyle and Frank Bruno. Bugner’s second fight with Ali, in Kuala Lumpur in 1975, marked an unsuccessful challenge for the uni fied heavyweight titles, with Ali beating him via decision – just as he had done in Las Vegas in 1973. However, Bugner was a two-time British and British Commonwealth Champion, who also held the European title on three occasions. Bugner, who made his pro debut in 1967, first retired from boxing in 1976 but ended up competing spo radically until 1999. His second retirement followed a TKO defeat by Bruno in 1987, while his final retirement occurred in 1999 – after a victory over Levi Billups in Australia – when he was 49 years old. His pro record officially stands at 69-13-1, including 41 knockout wins.
E UROPE RYDER CUP captain Luke Donald vowed his squad would be ready to handle the pressure and intensity of the golf showdown against the United States later this month. Donald, who guided Europe to victory two years ago in Rome, made his six captain’s picks on Monday to complete his lineup for the biennial matches on Sept 26-28 at Bethpage Black in suburban New York, where fans are expected to be loud USA supporters. “If you’re prepared and you’re ready, we understand what’s going to happen to us,” Donald said. “It’s our reaction to that that is really important. We all have fears. We all have anxieties and we all find Ryder Cups pressurised, but these are top athletes that understand how to walk towards that fear. “You want to embrace what a Ryder Cup represents and part of that is embracing the crowd and embracing that atmosphere and certainly these guys will be ready for that.” The Englishman will guide a veteran-filled squad, with his picks MCLAREN team boss Andrea Stella expects Lando Norris to show his fight ing spirit after the blow of retirement in Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix. The Briton is now 34 points behind Australian teammate Oscar Piastri in their Formula One title battle with nine rounds remaining. He said on Sunday that he would be going full-on to try and win every race. “When he says he’s going to be full commitment … it just means that if any thing he will try to extract out of himself even more from his incredible poten tial,” Stella told reporters. “We know that his talent is immense and I’m sure this situation in the cham pionship will give him extra motivation to try and extract it.” Piastri has won seven of the 15 grands prix so far in 2025 with Norris on five. Red Bull’s four-times world cham pion Max Verstappen has won twice, and was second in his home race at Zandvoort on Sunday, with Mercedes’ George Russell triumphant in Canada last June. McLaren will be chasing a sixth win in a row at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, where last year Norris took pole and fastest lap yet finished third with
“For him to be there, it just shows how big the Ryder Cup is,” Donald said. “We’re all expecting the crowds and the energy and the environment to be very loud, be very spirited. I think he’ll add to that. But again, there’s something that we’ve been expecting. We know he was going to come for a few weeks, we heard, and we’ll be ready for it.” Lowry is ready for whatever New York fans might bring. “When you’re prepared for something, it’s much easier to handle it,” he said. Rahm, a Masters and US Open winner, expects New York fans to be impressive. “It’s going to be special,” he said. “New Yorkers are going to be incredible fans. It’s going to be difficult for us.” Rahm has learned from past taunts. “I’m not going to lie and say I’ve been perfect with handling my emotions with the crowds in the past,” Rahm said. “But the more I’ve experienced … the better I understand how to handle things.” – AFP
including Spain’s Jon Rahm, Ireland’s Shane Lowry, Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, Austrian Sepp Straka, Norway’s Viktor Hovland and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick. Those qualifying automatically on points previously included Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, England’s Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood, Scotsman Robert MacIntyre and the only Cup rookie on the roster, Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard. “We can only be authentic to ourselves. I think if you look at New Yorkers, they appreciate that,” Donald said. “They appreciate you going out there, fighting hard for your team. “They will be very passionate and supportive of the US. We’re quite aware of that and we’ll be ready for the noise. “Different challenges require different strategies and certainly this has been in the back of my mind for the whole captaincy.” Donald is also as prepared as possible for the expected day-one appearance of US President Donald Trump.
