CZECH Marketa Vondrousova booked her place in the US Open quarterfinals by beating ninth seed Elena Rybakina 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in a clash of former major winner yesterday. Vondrousova, who has fallen to No. 60 in the world, returns to the last eight at Flushing Meadows for the second time following her 2023 run. “After everything I’ve been through it’s good to be standing here again,”Vondrousova said. “It’s a long way to go but its been an amazing week so far I’m incredibly happy to be here.” The 26-year-old will face world No. 1 and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the next round. The 27-year-old from Belarus produced a clinical display to dispatch unseeded Spaniard Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-4, a win that marked her 12th consecutive quarterfinal appearance or better in Grand Slam tournaments. Sabalenka said her consistency is the result of finding balance on and off the court. “I’m super proud, I think that’s an incredible achievement,” Sabalenka said. “I think for me the key was balancing on and off-the-court life. “I think I’ve done a great job on balancing really hard work and also great recovery and some fun time outside of tennis court. I think that’s been the key.” Sabalenka said she also revels in the pressure of being the world’s top-ranked player. “I think pressure is part of our lives, and I think pressure is normal,” she said. “I’m enjoying being world number one. I’m enjoying this pressure. I’m working really hard to be where I am. “For me, it’s a fun life if you’re really enjoying your job.” The Moldova-born Bucsa, ranked 95 in the world, had never been further than the third round in 15 previous Grand Slam appearances before her New York campaign, and she never looked like improving that record against Sabalenka on Sunday. Sabalenka broke Bucsa twice on her way to wrapping up the first set in just 27 minutes before dominating the second set to close out the win. – Reuters/AFP Vondrousova books date with Sabalenka Wang breaks through for maiden LPGA title CHINA’S Miranda Wang captured her maiden LPGA title at the FM Championship at TPC Boston, fighting off a final round challenge from world No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand yesterday. Wang finished with a four-round total of 20-under 268 (66-67-65-70) to become the 11th first-time winner on the 2025 LPGA Tour and the seventh rookie to triumph this season. She finished one shot ahead of Thitikul (69-68-65 67), who registered her 10th top-10 and third runner up finish of the year. Starting the final round with a three-stroke advantage, Wang was caught by Thitikul at the turn after the Thai star went out in 31 strokes. The Chinese player showed some nerves with a bogey at the 15th hole, falling out of the lead. Hole 17 proved pivotal when Thitikul, playing a group ahead, made a messy bogey while Wang nailed a six-foot birdie putt to regain the lead. Both players parred the par-five closing hole. “I hope it’s the first of many, and I will work hard. It’s a wonderful beginning to my LPGA career. It’s my rookie year and this happened, so it’s a wonderful start,” said Wang. “Winning an LPGA event has been my dream since day one of my golf, because I started playing when I was eight years old and I was watching LPGA tournaments on TV,” added the 26-year-old Duke University alumnae. Korean Sei Young Kim was sole third on 17-under 271 (65-65-71-70), one shot ahead of American Andrea Lee (67-69-66-70). Wang is the 24th different winner on the 2025 LPGA Tour through 23 events, and is the first winner from the China since Ruoning Yin at the 2024 Maybank Championship. – LPGA

Djokovic makes history Serb becames oldest man to reach all four Grand Slam quarterfinals in single season

N OVAK DJOKOVIC made Grand Slam history at the age of 38 yester day with a commanding 6-3, 6-3, 6 2 victory over Jan-Lennard Struff, but the triumph came at a cost – his quarter final match falls on his daughter’s birthday. “Yeah, she was not very happy about it, me being absent from the birthday party. Don’t remind me of that, please,” said Djokovic, who became the oldest man to reach all four Grand Slam quarterfinals in a single season. The victory also moved Djokovic into his 64th Grand Slam quarterfinal, extending his all-time record, while keeping alive his pursuit of a record 25th major title. But the Serbian’s mind was clearly on family matters as he spoke about the sacrifice required at this stage of his career. “I’ll try to win if I’m here. At least I’m going to try to win and give her that kind of present,” Djokovic said. “I’m going to send some nice presents, as well, nice surprises for her birthday party.” The match itself was a masterclass in experience over power during the 109 minute encounter at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Djokovic dominated from the opening game, breaking the 35-year-old German’s serve six times. His own serve proved decisive against a player who entered the DALAM MAHKAMAH TINGGI MALAYA DI JOHOR BAHRU DALAM NEGERI JOHOR DARUL TAKZIM, MALAYSIA (BAHAGIAN SIVIL) SAMAN PEMULA NO. :JA-31NCvC-718-06/2025 Dalam Perkara Harta Pusaka TECK CHEE CHONG @ TECK MOH GEE (No. K/P: 370403-01-5273/0670070), Si Mati; Dan Dalam Perkara Aturan 71 Kaedah-kaedah Mahkamah 2012; Dan SITASI MENURUT AKTA PROBET DAN PENTADBIRAN 1959 Kepada REGINA TECK (No. K/P: 680420-05-5262) yang beralamat di No. 3, Jalan Jasa 19, Taman Mutiara Rini, 81300 Skudai, Johor. Frances Tiafoe (17th) – to reach his first US Open fourth round but was unable to put any serious pressure on the seventh seed. The German managed only 19 winners and committed 32 unforced errors. Their combined age of 73 years and 60 days made this the oldest US Open men’s singles match in the fourth round or later during the professional era. Djokovic, who now has a 36-0 record against qualifiers at Grand Slams, required treatment from the physio on his right shoulder and forearm during the match but did not appear overly troubled by the issues. Alcaraz shows ‘good rhythm’ to reach last eight

WORLD NO. 2 Carlos Alcaraz (pic) maintained his quest for a second US Open title with a straight-set victory over unseeded Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the fourth round. The 22-year-old, who is through to the last eight in New York for the fourth time in five years, is still yet to drop a set at this year’s tournament, coming through 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-4. The Spaniard will face Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals after the Czech 20th seed beat Adrian Mannarino in four sets. Alcaraz had to be at his magical best at times, producing 36 winners to 11 unforced errors, chasing down several drop-shots and even producing an extravagant round-the-back return to counter Rinderknech’s attacking approach. “The first set was tight. We didn’t have break points and it didn’t mean we were serving well – the percentage was bad from both of us,” Alcaraz said. “But after that, I got in a good rhythm and tried to make the most of opportunities. “I played good aggressive tennis and

found a good rhythm after the second set and tried to keep it going.” Addressing his trick shots, he added: “Sometimes I practise them, I’m not going to lie. “If I have the opportunity, why not? The people like it, I like playing tennis like this, it just comes naturally.” In the night session on Louis Armstrong Stadium, Taylor Fritz cruised into the quarterfinals with a dominant win over the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac. Fourth seed Fritz did not face a single break point as he wrapped up a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win in one hour and 38 minutes. The 27-year-old – the last American in the men’s singles – will face Novak Djokovic after the 24-time Grand Slam champion beat Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. “I had some battles the last couple of matches but I felt dialled and ready to go tonight. I played solid, I put balls in court, I was aggressive at the right times and backed it up with good serving,” Fritz said. – Agencies
