MSU School of Veterinary launched
T HE Medical and Health Sciences cluster at Management and Science University (MSU) has expanded with the inauguration of the School of Veterinary Medicine (SOV) recently. With that, MSU becomes the first private university in Malaysia to offer a veterinary pro gramme, the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), “strengthening the nation’s veterinary education land scape”. The university said the initiative responds to the advancing demand for veterinary professionals, whose roles today extend far beyond clinical practice. The soft launch of SOV took place at the MSU’s Performing Arts Theatre in main campus, supported by the International Medical School (IMS). The event featured a forum and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchange ceremony with key industry players. The event was officiated by MSU president and founder Professor Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, graced by MSU vice-chancellor Professor Puan Sri Datuk Dr Junainah Abd Hamid, MSU vice-president for international affairs Professor Dr Indang Ariati Ariffin, IMS dean Professor Dr Mohamad Khairuddin Abdul Wahab, SOV’s advisory board members Professor Datin Paduka Setia Dr Aini Ideris and Professor Dr Abdul Aziz Saharee, as well as members of MSU’s senior management team. To lead the newly established faculty, Professor Datuk Dr Bashir Ahmad Fateh Mohamed has been appointed as the dean of the SOV. Mohd Shukri, in his welcoming address, said: “Establishing SOV is our commitment to advancing the animal health industry. The establishment of the SOV complements the existing faculties at MSU, which include the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, the Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies, the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering, the IMS, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Dentistry, the School of Education and Social Sciences, the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts, the School of Graduate Studies, the Graduate School of Management and the Centre for Fundamental Studies.

The forum was moderated by Abdul Aziz, who is also a council member and registrar of the Malaysia College of Veterinary Specialists and a
veterinary medicine. The forum, with the title “Advancing Animal Industry through Excellence in Veterinary Education”, featured a keynote address along with insights from distinguished guests representing academic, industry and professional veterinary practice. Delivering the keynote address was the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) acting director general Dr Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Harun. The first session of the forum included presentations by the Federation of Livestock Farmers’ Associations of Malaysia (FLFAM) library, further enriching their learning resources. To make reading a fun and interactive experience, the programme included storytelling sessions; sparking the students’ imagination and helping them see reading as an adventure rather than a task. Two exceptional students from each school will also be rewarded with tokens of appreciation. Beyond this, the participating schools were encouraged to create a vibrant reading culture through book exchanges, classroom story-sharing, and journaling activities while nurturing their critical thinking . “Through our reading rogramme, we want to do more than just give
animal health, impacting community safety, the food system and the supply chain within our country. “We believe that SOV can complement and contribute to the nation’s veterinary education landscape. We express our gratitude to all well-wishers and supporters who have enabled us to launch and run SOV.” In conjunction with the launch, an MoU was also exchanged between MSU, SOV and industry partners Vet Partners (M) Sdn Bhd, Teguh Setia Jaya and AGK Dairy Fresh Sdn Bhd, aimed at further strengthening collaborative efforts in the field of
Nurturing a love of reading THE launch of the 2025 edition of the Sports Toto Malaysia (STM) “Reading My Companion” programme brought the joy of reading to 11 “micro-sized” Chinese primary schools across Penang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor. Gajah are part of the programme while three primary schools in Sri Gading, Parit Buloh and Parit Yaani in Johor are included. This year, about 1,506 students will benefit from the reading programme, designed to nurture a love of reading and engagement for students who have limited opportunities in rural settings.
Among the 11 schools chosen for the successful reading programme were SJK (C) Li Tek ‘B’ and SKJ(C) Heng Ee located in George Town, Penang, while in Selangor SJK(C) Kg. Gurney in Hulu Yam Bharu and SJK(C) Kalumpang in Kerling were chosen. Two other chosen schools located in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan are SJK(C)Sin Min in Gemencheh and SKJ(C) Simpang Pertang.
