Spanish ProTeam Kern Phrama replace French WorldTeam

THE French WorldTeam, Cofidis, has withdrawn from the Petronas Le Tour de Langkawi 2025 (PLTdL25). Their spot will be taken up by the Spanish ProTeam, Equipo Kern Pharma. It was confirmed by the PLTdL25 chief operating officer (COO) Emir Abdul Jalal after the team contacted the organisers last Thursday. In response, the organisers acted quickly and received immediate confir mation from Kern Pharma, who will be making a return to the 29th edition of the tour, which runs from Sept 28 to Oct 5. “Although we’re a bit disappointed with team’s decision, we’re still confi dent the excitement of the PLTdL25 won’t be affected because Kern Pharma is also a great team. “Due to time constraints, we don’t have the opportunity to lobby another WorldTeam as a replacement, and Kern Pharma, which was on the list of four teams that had to be left out previ ously, responded quickly and expressed

statement yesterday. For the record, Equipo Kern Pharma made its first appearance in PLTdL23 with two of its riders, Pablo Castillo Zapater, finishing third overall, 58 sec onds behind the overall green jersey winner Simon Carr (EF Education) while Jon Agirre Egana finished eighth. The team also finished third overall in the Best Team category behind EF Education and Euskaltel-Euskadi. However, Kern Pharma had a stronger performance last year when they won the Best Team category fin ishing 1 minute and 39 seconds ahead of Astana. In addition, three of their riders were in the top 10 with Unai Iribar in third place overall followed by Ibon Ruiz (7th) and Jorge Gutierrez (8th). “At the moment, we have not received the list of six riders who will be sent by Kern Pharma to PLTdL25, but among the team’s 22 riders is the PLTdL22 champion, Ivan Sosa. It will certainly be interesting if Kern Pharma also fields this former Movistar rider from Colombia. “We’re confident that after two con secutive years of experiencing the twists and turns of the PLTdL race, Kern Pharma will send a strong line up, especially since they were not included in the wild card teams for this year’s Vuelta a Espana,” said Emir. The 29th edition of PLTdL25 will

pass through 12 states in Peninsular Malaysia over eight days, covering a total distance of 1,243.5km, starting in Pulau Langkawi and ending at KLCC, Kuala Lumpur. The race will begin in Langkawi Island on Sept 28.

BRIEFS

Muhammad Syahmi Zamri completed Terengganu’s huge win, with each of them scoring in the 84th minute and during second half extra time, respectively. NUR ANDRINA COMPLETE SPRINT DOUBLE Malaysia’s Nur Andrina Zainuddin overcame an alleged false start to win the women’s 200m event at the SEA Deaf Games 2025 yesterday. The dramatic victory at the Student Sports Training Centre in Ragunan, South Jakarta, crowned Nur Andrina as the undisputed sprint queen of the Games, as she had won the 100m title yesterday with a time of 13.06s. Nur Andrina was initially flashed the “red card” and barred from run ning for allegedly making a false start. However, an official protest by the Malaysian delegation was accepted by the technical committee, and she was allowed to “rerun” the race alone. The 20-year-old athlete clocked 27.63s to deliver a gold medal for Malaysia. Alinda Anastasia clinched the silver with a time of 28.83s, while Indonesia’s Selly Dwi Juniarti took bronze in 29.12s.

repeating the same mistakes at the World Championships. Tang Jie and Ee Wei have received a bye in the first round of the world meet and are expected to face India’s world No. 33 pair Rohan Kapoor-Ruthvika Gadde in the second round. TFC TOP SUPER LEAGUE TABLE Terengganu FC (TFC) has climbed to the top of the Super League table after a goal-fest, thrashing DPMM FC 5-0 in a match at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei on Friday. Terengganu midfielder Careca scored the fastest goal of the season, putting the Turtles ahead just 11 seconds into the game. TFC didn’t wait long to score their second goal when midfielder Nurillo Tukhtasinov fired a solid shot that flew past the defensive line and beyond Naumovski’s reach in the 16th minute. The visiting team were even more comfortable, leading 3-0 in the 74th minute after Careca calmly converted a penalty awarded by refe ree Abang Azharudin Abdullah for a handball by Prosper Owusu. National mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie Toh Ee Wei have shown progress in recent training sessions, an encouraging sign for their campaign in the Badminton World Championships, which kick off next Monday in Paris. Academy Badminton Malaysia coaching director Rexy Mainaky said he hoped the pair would be able to maintain that momentum when competing in the tournament. “I can see there’s already some improvement from Tang Jie and Ee Wei in the recent training sessions. Although it’s not yet significant, for me it’s still a positive devel opment for both of them,” he told reporters recently. The world No. 4 pair had earlier struggled to find their best form, at one point splitting temporarily in March before reunit ing less than a month later.
