The importance of quality packaging o MSU celebrates rich culture and heritage
at Health Science Week M ANAGEMENT and Science University (MSU) proudly welcomed dele gates from Gaziantep University, Turkiye, as part of the International Series segment during the university’s Health Science Week organised by the faculty of health and life sciences. The visiting delegates, Dr Hatice Pekmez, associate professor in the department of gastronomy and culinary arts and Dr Banu Koc, a food engineer and academic in the same field, explored the rich cultural heritage of Turkish cuisine. This a legacy of the Ottoman Empire, while also delving into the health sciences behind modern food packaging. “I am passionate about combining scientific knowledge with culinary creativity. “My work focuses on sustainable food practices and the development of high-quality dried food products that retain their nutritional value and sensory appeal,” shared Dr Banu. Their presentations not only celebrated Turkish culinary traditions but also highlighted the critical and often overlooked role of high quality food packaging in today’s food industry. “Food packaging goes far beyond aesthetics or convenience. It is
essential for ensuring food safety, quality preservation, sustainability and consumer trust. “Firstly packaging acts as a protective barrier against contamination, spoilage, and physical damage during transport and storage. In today’s global food supply chains, proper packaging is key to delivering safe and consumable products across long distances. “Secondly, innovative packaging technologies such as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), vacuum sealing, and active packaging extend shelf life by controlling oxygen, moisture, and microbial growth, reducing food waste. “Thirdly, good quality packaging communicates vital information: ingredients, allergens, expiration dates, and usage instructions. As consumer awareness rises, clear and transparent labelling is crucial for informed choices and brand trust. “Finally, packaging design, materials, and sustainability claims influence consumer behaviour and brand identity. With growing demand for eco-friendly solutions, packaging has become a space for ongoing innovation,” said Dr Hatice. In short, food packaging is a multidisciplinary field that bridges

The commitment to nurturing holistic, entrepreneurial, and balanced graduates is reflected in every aspect of campus life.” Dr Banu added, “MSU stands out for its student-centred approach and the seamless integration of innovation and technology in teaching and learning. The multicultural environment here also fosters meaningful cross-cultural exchange and nurtures a global mindset among students and staff alike.” The MSU Health Science Week 2025 aims to raise awareness of environmental health and occupational safety and health (OSH)
science, technology, marketing, and environmental sustainability. Its importance increases as modern food systems and consumer expectations continue to evolve. The presentation provided valuable insights for MSU students pursuing careers in culinary arts and hospitality, enriching their understanding of global culinary practices and the science that supports them. Dr Hatice said, “Our experience at MSU has been both enriching and inspiring. From the outset, we were impressed by the university’s emphasis on applied learning, industry collaboration and global
