SPORTS TUESDAY | AUG 5, 2025 28 First major for Yamashita Miyu survives stern test to become third Japanese to clinch British Open J APAN’S Miyu Yamashita won the Women’s British Open by two strokes at Royal Porthcawl yesterday to clinch an emotional first major title. amount of people supporting me today really pushed me towards the victory and this is for them.” Yamashita’s previous best performance in a major was a tie for second place at last year’s Women’s PGA Championship.

AMERICAN Cameron Young seized his first US PGA Tour title yesterday, firing a 2-under 68 in the final round of the Wyndham Championship for a six-stroke victory over Mac Meissner. It was an emotional win for Young, whose seven career runner-up finishes included the 2022 British Open at St. Andrews. He started the day with a five-stroke lead and after an opening bogey reeled off five straight birdies – a run that included a 26-foot bomb at the third hole. A pair of bogeys at 16 and 17 were immaterial and Young tapped in for a par at the 18th to cap a 2-under 68 that gave him a 22-under total of 258. “I’ve been waiting for it for awhile,” Young said. “I never thought I’d really be that emotional about it, but it’s the end of my fourth season and I’ve had my chances. Never quite like this – and I wasn’t going to let it get away from me today.” The win at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, had a little extra resonance for Young, who played college golf at North Carolina’s Wake Forest University. He was also hoping the win might catch the eye of US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley with the biennial match play showdown with Europe coming up in September. “Obviously that team is a goal of many of us,” the world No. 44 said. Fellow American Meissner had five birdies in his 4 under 66 to take second on 16-under 264. Sweden’s Alex Noren and American Mark Hubbard shared third on 265 while US amateur Jackson Koivun shared fifth place with American Chris Kirk and England’s Aaron Rai. Yesterday marked the end of the PGA regular season with the top 70 on the points list advancing to the playoffs which start this week at the St. Jude Championship. Of the players hoping to play their way in this week, Kirk’s finish was enough to move him up from 73rd in the standings to 61st. – AFP Young claims win at Wyndham ALEX DE MINAUR pushed his ATP winning streak to seven matches as he fended off Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 yesterday to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP Toronto Masters. The Australian won the Washington title the previous Sunday before plunging into the chaotic schedule in Toronto, where play began on the weekend and will continue through Thursday. The ninth seed will play Ben Shelton for a place in the semifinals after the American defeated Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1). De Minaur has now beaten Tiafoe in three of four meetings. “It was never gonna be easy, he’s got the ability to switch it on whenever he wants. It was tricky to put him away,” De Minaur said, adding that the hot, windy conditions made it even trickier. “I was just happy to sneak away with this win,“ he said after booking a seventh quarter-final of the season. Holder lifts Windies over Pakistan JASON HOLDER smashed a four on the final ball to give West Indies a dramatic two-wicket victory over Pakistan on Sunday, liting the hosts level in their T20 international series. On the same night he took four wickets to reach a West Indies T20I record 81 for his career – breaking Dwayne Bravo’s old mark of 78 – Holder went 16 not out and West Indies ended a horrid losing streak with zero balls to spare. Pakistan, which won Thursday’s opener by 14 runs, will try to bounce back in today’s series deciding T20 match under the lights at Lauderhill, Florida. Pakistan won the toss and batted first, going 133 for nine. Hasan Nawaz led Pakistan on 40 with four sixes and a four while captain Salman Agha added 38 on one six and three fours. everyone is an amazing feeling.” Yamashita is the fourth Japanese major champion in the past two years. Prior to 2024, Japan had just two major champions in the history of the LPGA Tour. Kim tested Yamashita when she drew level at the top of the leaderboard with a birdie on the second hole. But Yamashita immediately regained the lead when Kim missed two putts to bogey the next hole. A three-putt bogey on the seventh left Kim’s title challenge in tatters.

Yamashita carded a 2-under final round to hold off a strong challenge from England’s Charley Hull on the Welsh links course. She finished on 11-under for the tournament, with Hull and Japan’s Minami Katsu ending in a tie for second place after final rounds of 69 left them on 9-under. Just a day after turning 24, Yamashita became the third Japanese woman to win the British Open after Hinako Shibuno in 2019 and Ayako Okamoto in 1984. She joyously swigged from a bottle of champagne on the 18th green before wiping away tears of joy after sealing her victory. “To win such a historic tournament in front of all these amazing fans is such an incredible feeling,” Yamashita said. “ T h e course is set up to be very

She survived a stern test of her temperament on the last day after resuming with a one-stroke lead over South Korea’s Kim A-lim. Having posted a bogey-free 65 on Friday, she had carded a 2-over 74 marred by erratic driving off the tee and struggles on the greens in the third round. Yamashita recovered her composure yesterday as she embarked on a relentless march to the trophy.

Hull made her charge with three birdies in four holes to pull within a stroke of Yamashita. She had been 11 strokes back at the start of the third round. The largest 36-hole deficit overcome to win any LPGA major all-time is 10 shots, but Yamashita snuffed out any chance of that record being broken. – AFP

Prior to this year, Yamashita’s highest finish at the Women’s British Open was 13th in 2022, but she mastered the Porthcawl course in emphatic fashion.

“To be part of such a moment in history is something special,” she said. “Being my first

world and seeded second in Montreal, followed top-seeded Coco Gauff, third-seeded two time defending champion Jessica Pegula and fourth seeded Mirra Andreeva out the door. Fifth-seeded American Amanada Anisimova followed later with a straight-sets loss to Elina Svitolina. Tauson avenged a fourth round loss to Swiatek at Wimbledon and called her second career victory over a top-five player “unreal”. “Obviously it’s really great and it shows all the hard work I’ve been doing has been the right thing,“ Tauson said. “I’m getting more confidence in this kind of level and feeling like I belong here a bit more. I think that really helped me today in the important points.” Tauson booked a quarter final berth against Australian Open champion Madison Keys,

Osaka’s career put her into her first quarterfinal at the 1000 or Grand Slam level since Doha in 2024. Osaka said the coaching shakeup she instigated this week – parting with Patrick Mouratoglou

after less than a year and teaming up on a trial basis with former Swiatek coach Tomasz Wiktorowski – had energised her. “I enjoy his coaching style. He’s very direct and to the point. For someone like me, who my thoughts scatter around often, it’s very helpful,“ said Osaka. She will face Ukrainian veteran Svitolina, who beat Wimbledon runner-up Anisimova 6-4, 6-1. – AFP
