co-production between South Korea and Hong Kong, highlighting the strength of cross-border storytelling in Asia. At the press conference, the director and producer shared the challenges of casting the complex role of Yeon-jeon. According to them, finding the right actress who could embody emotional depth and silent strength was no easy task. But when Choi came into the picture, it became clear she was the right choice. “It is not an easy role, but Choi brings an authenticity and quiet resilience that the character needed. “ Bluefish is more than just a film, it is a visceral portrait of broken people seeking light in unexpected places. We are excited to bring this powerful story to life and share it with audiences across Asia. More than that, we hope the film gives hope, light and courage to people with
with Yeon-jeon, a mute milk delivery girl. When his aggression is met not with fear, but with silent compassion, Gwang-su begins to question the man he has become. As guilt gives way to tenderness, Gwang-su slowly begins to change, until a misunderstanding drives them apart. When he later discovers that Yeon-jeon is in danger, he must decide whether to walk away or stand up for something real. What follows is a powerful journey of sacrifice, redemption and the quiet grace of human kindness in the face of brutality. Collaborative effort Currently in pre-production and scheduled to begin filming in October, Bluefish exemplifies Jazzy Pictures’s bold storytelling and regional creative collaboration. Directed by acclaimed Korean filmmaker Lee Sang-hoon and produced by Joanne Goh, Bluefish brings together a dynamic cast led by Ji Seung-Hyun and Cecilia Choi. Choi is known for her emotionally nuanced performances for her role in Beyond the Dream , which won the Best Actress award at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards in 2020. Story of redemption At the heart of Bluefish is the story of Gwang-su, a drifter with a violent past, who is unexpectedly transformed after a confrontation The day kicked off with a lively press conference at Loud Speaker 2.0 @ A Quiet Place, followed by a star-studded red carpet premiere at mmCineplexes, Berjaya Times Square in the evening. MaYiDuo was joined by main cast Charlene Huang, Regina Lim and Xixi Lim as they met the press. She used to get trolled online – that real-life experience inspired the film’s story,” he said, adding that each role was tailor-made. “Xixi has great comedy timing, Regina brings emotional depth, and Sai – I honestly think he could be Malaysia’s next big comedy name.” The film was also shot in various Malaysian locations, including markets, hospitals and restaurants, keeping the vibe grounded and real. disabilities – to show them (that) they, too, can live independently and meaningfully, just like anyone else,” said Goh. “The idea for Bluefish was born from a long-standing interest of mine: the way society perceives and treats people with disabilities. Often, we view them with quiet pity or approach them with discomfort, creating a divide that isolates rather than includes. Through this film, I wanted to break that barrier, not by portraying disability as something extraordinary or tragic, but by showing it as part of everyday life. “With Bluefish , I hope to express a simple truth: that people with disabilities are not so different from
the rest of us. Their lives, struggles, and emotions are just as rich, complex, and human,” Lee noted. With its compelling mix of emotional depth and gripping action, Bluefish offers a fresh cinematic voice, one that dares to explore the transformative power of empathy in a fractured world. At its core, Bluefish is a life-affirming drama about two individuals who see the world very differently, one burdened by dissatisfaction, the other embracing joy despite hardship. When their paths cross, both are changed. It is a story about connection, healing and discovering unexpected meaning in life.
