Hard work pays off for Shubman
DOUG GHIM holed out for an eagle on the way to a bogey-free 9-under 62 yesterday to take a one-shot lead over Max Homa and Austin Eckroat at the US PGA Tour John Deere Classic in Illinois. Ghim, without a win in 162 PGA Tour starts, holed out from 91 yards out in the fairway at the par-four sixth hole at TPC Deere Run, where he’s hoping he can become the 25th player to claim a first tour title in the event. The 29-year-old, who added seven birdies, knows he’ll have to keep going low to have a chance tomorrow, with another 15 players within three shots of the lead after the first round. “Honestly, any time you can get to 20-under or better, you’re going to have a chance,” he said. “It’s still golf. It’s still a challenge. You have to hit fairways – I hit a lot of them today. “So just trying to shoot forwards of six-under every day and see where that puts me.” His closest pursuers are Homa – who had nine birdies and a bogey – and Eckroat, who had two eagles on the front nine and four birdies to share second on eight-under 63. “I just did everything really solid,” Homa said. “I made a ton of putts, kept the driver in good spots, got to take advantage of my iron play, my wedge play. “(It) always feels good to get off to a good start when you’re struggling, that’s for sure,” Homa said. I NDIA captain Shubman Gill said work he’d done in the build-up to the tour of England was paying divi dends after a record-breaking double century helped his side into a commanding position in the second Test yesterday. Shubman’s majestic 269 was the foundation of India’s first innings 587 at Edgbaston. And before stumps on the second day they had reduced England to 77-3, a huge deficit of 510 runs. That actually represented a recovery after Akash Deep, only playing after India rested Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s top-ranked Test bowler, reduced England to 13-2 with two wickets in consecutive deliveries. The 25-year-old Shubman, in just his second Test as skipper, broke India records previously held by batting greats Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar. Shubman’s innings surpassed the recently retired Kohli’s 254 against South Africa at Pune in 2019 as the highest score by an India Test captain, and replaced Tendulkar’s 241 against Australia at Sydney as the highest score by
an India batsman in a Test outside Asia. It also topped Gavaskar’s celebrated 221 at the Oval in 1979 as the largest score by an India batsman in a Test in England. India lost the first Test of this series at Headingley by five wickets despite several batsmen, including Shubman with 147, scoring hundreds. “I worked on a few things before the series as well, that I thought might be important for me going into Test cricket,” Shubman told Sky Sports after stumps. “Looking at the results, they are working for me.” India, bidding for just a fourth series win in England after triumphs in 1971, 1986 and 2007, were made to pay for dropping several chances in Leeds. But, all three of their wickets on Thursday came via sharp slip catches, with Shubman helping Akash dismiss opener Ben Duckett, who made 149 in the first Test, for a duck. “Getting the catches was really good confidence for us,” said Shubman. – AFP

Webster, Carey again steady Aussies

A second consecutive century partnership between Alex Carey and Beau Webster lifted Australia to 286 all out on the opening day of the second Test against the West Indies at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada yesterday. Rapidly fading light denied the Aussie opening bowlers a couple overs against the West Indies opening pair of former captain Kraigg Brathwaite, playing in his 100th Test, and John Campbell. Less than a week after their second innings effort in the first Test paved the way to a 159-run victory in Barbados, the sixth wicket pairing of Carey and Webster put on 112 to ensure that the Caribbean bowlers were again thwarted in pursuit of a swift demolition of the visitors’ first innings. Carey, as usual, was all positivity in a topscore of 63 off 81 balls, an innings highlighted by one six and 10 fours. Webster, who continues to impress in his first year of Test cricket, was more measured in his innings of 60, occupying 115 deliveries during which he struck one six and six fours, playing the sheet-anchor role through a succession of partnerships after Australia slipped to 93 for four in the morning session after opting to bat first. He was eventually ninth out by the run out route, coming back for a non-existent second run in one of his few errors of judgement in the course of his innings. – AFP
