Lee stays cool in Texas Aussie grabs four-shot lead at ‘brutal’ Women’s PGA Championship

A USTRALIA’S Minjee Lee defied difficult, windy condi tions with a remarkable bogey-free 3-under 69 yes terday to seize a four-stroke lead over Jeeno Thitikul at the Women’s PGA Championship in Texas. Lee, chasing her third major title, fired three birdies in one of just three sub-par rounds at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, north of Dallas, where soaring temperatures and wind tested golfers for a third straight day. start the day, Lee grabbed her first birdie at the ninth, where she blasted out of a greenside bunker to four feet and made the putt. She finally took control at the par five 14th, drilling a 19-foot birdie putt as Jeeno three-putted for a bogey that dropped her three strokes back. Lee added a birdie at the 15th, and remained bogey free with a par save at 18 – where her second shot raced through the green but she chipped to three feet. “I try to stay within myself and play the shot as best as I could,” she said. “Just stayed patient, just take it as it comes.” Lee, whose 10 LPGA victories include major titles at the 2021 Evian Championship and 2022 US “I just try to stay patient out there,” the 29-year-old said after building a 6-under total of 210. “You can’t get ahead of yourself, especially in these conditions.” Trailing Jeeno by three to

Women’s Open, said there would be plenty of work to do in the final round despite her four-shot cushion. “It’s just only getting harder and harder just with I think pressure of a major championship, and also just the course just demands so much from you,” she said. World No. 2 Jeeno’s hopes of a first major title took an early hit with bogeys at the third and sixth. She rolled in a 12-foot birdie at the eighth, but dropped into a tie for the lead after back-to-back bogeys at 11 and 12. She bounced back from her bogey at 14 with a birdie at 15, but gave back a shot at the 16th, finishing with a four-over 76 for 214. Lee and Jeeno, both based in the Dallas area, were the only players under par heading into the final round. US veteran Lexi Thompson, play ing a limited schedule this season, shook off a horrendous start to post a 3-over 75 to headline a trio sharing third place on 1-over 217. She was joined by South Korean Choi Hye-jin, who carded a 72, and Japan’s Miyu Yamashita, who shot 73. World No. 1 Nelly Korda had five birdies and five bogeys in her even par 72 to headline a group of four on 218. “It’s brutal out there when it comes to the setup of the golf course, wind conditions, everything,” Korda said. “I’m very happy with even par. “You’re just happy to get 18 under your belt on a day like this,” added the American. – AFP

ENGLAND’S Tommy Fleetwood has put together a nice career, but none of his victories have come on the PGA Tour. He’s in position to change that overnight, but he won’t even be the sentimental favourite for the final day of the Travelers Championship. Fleetwood shot 7-under 63 in yesterday’s third round to break away from a high-profile group near the top of the leaderboard at Cromwell, Connecticut. Fleetwood, who for the second time in three rounds didn’t record a bogey, will carry a three-shot advantage into the final round at TPC River Highlands. He’s at 16 under 194. “I would love to win on the PGA Tour,” Fleetwood said. “I think it’s like an element of your career that eve rybody wants, and I of course want it.” Russell Henley shot 61 and Keegan Bradley posted 63 to sit at 13-under. Australia’s Jason Day is at 11-under after a third-round 67. It’s Bradley, the US captain for the Ryder Cup and a native of New England, who’ll have the attention of the galleries for the final round. “Tomorrow’s the year anniversary of getting the call for the Ryder Cup, so pretty crazy that we’re a year out,” Bradley said after yesterday’s round. “But special day tomorrow, could be even better.” On top of that, he considers the Travelers Championship his home tournament. “It took me a while to figure out how to play here in my home event and pressing and trying so hard,” Bradley said. “Now it’s just about my 15th time and much more ready for the challenge.” The third round began with Fleetwood, Justin Thomas and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler tied for first place. Scheffler, playing on his 29th birthday, plum meted to 7-under and in a tie for eighth place with a 72, aided by a birdie on the last hole. Thomas had a similar, albeit belated, decline on his way to 73, coming undone by a quadruple-bogey 9 on the 13th hole. Harris English (67), Wyndham Clark (66) and Brian Harman (65) are tied for fifth place at 8-under. – Field Level Media

THE first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka fizzled out into a damp draw on Saturday, with rain robbing the match in Galle of a proper climax. Sri Lanka were set a tall order of 296 in 37 overs and were tot tering at 72-4 when stumps were drawn 9.5 overs into the final hour, with both captains shaking hands and accepting no result was possible. The day belonged to Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored centuries in both innings. “We were low on confidence coming into the series but this was a very good Test match,” he said. “We wanted to declare early but rain forced us to rethink.” Shanto made an unbeaten 125 in the second innings after posting 148 in his first dig. It was the second time he had achieved the feat, scoring two centuries in a match against Afghanistan in 2023. Archer in line for red ball return FAST bowler Jofra Archer could be set for his first Test cricket action in more than four years after being named in English county side Sussex’s squad for their trip to Durham. Archer has not picked up a red cricket ball since May 2021 for Sussex after a series of injuries kept delaying his return. He has since returned to international white-ball cricket for England, his last appearance coming in the ICC Champions Trophy one day defeat to South Africa in March. England selector Luke Wright said earlier this month that if Archer could get some action for Sussex he could be available for the second Test against India next month, with captain Ben Stokes saying the 30-year old was desperate to return to Test cricket.
