Draper downs Popyrin Briton reaches Queen’s quarters, Mensik loses his cool B RITISH second seed Jack Draper defeated Alexei Popyrin 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) to reach the quar terfinals of the Queen’s Club Championships yesterday, while Czech eighth seed Jakub Mensik lost his temper during defeat to Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut. responded. The Briton made the decisive break to lead 6-5 and smashed his 10th ace of the match to earn a hard-fought victory. “My family and friends are here and I love being at home and playing in front of them so it’s an emotional moment for me honestly,” Draper added.

BRIEFS

Chelsea’s Mudryk charged CHELSEA winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged by England’s Football Association with violating anti-doping rules after failing a drugs test. Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since Nov 28 following his provisional suspension by the FA for an “adverse finding in a routine urine test” in December. The Ukraine international at the time said he was in “complete shock” and he “never knowingly used any banned substances”. But Mudryk could face a potential ban of up to four years under FA rules. An FA statement yesterday said: “We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with anti-doping rule violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of regulations three and four of the FA’s anti-doping regulations. As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.” The Blades name Selles as manager SHEFFIELD UNITED named Ruben Selles as manager to replace Chris Wilder who left after a mutual agreement following the club’s failure to gain promotion to the Premier League,

the second-tier Championship side said yesterday. Selles took charge of Hull City in December with the club bottom of the Championship and the Spanish 42 year-old guided them to safety. Wilder had signed a contract extension until 2028 with the Blades earlier this year but after finishing third in the Championship, they failed to win the playoff final, losing 2-1 to Sunderland. Italy’s decline due to illegal streaming SERIE A CEO Luigi De Siervo has pointed to illegal streaming and the resulting lack of TV revenue as a factor behind Italy’s struggles to nurture homegrown talent as the Azzurri strive to return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014. Once a permanent fixture at the World Cup, four-times world champions Italy find themselves in dire straits having missed out on the last two editions and at risk of missing out on a third. Italian authorities recently intensified efforts to counter online piracy, which is costing billions of euros to broadcasters and sports leagues globally as they try to protect the value of their broadcast rights. TV rights make up the bulk of revenue for Serie A teams.

Draper will face American Brandon Nakashima, who defeated British wildcard Dan Evans 7-5, 7-6(4) to reach back-to-back quarterfinals on grass after his recent run at the Stuttgart Open. “My game suits the grass well so really glad to play well when it mattered today,” Nakashima said. Meanwhile, Mensik crashed out after his 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 loss to Bautista Agut, receiving a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct at one stage. Mensik won the Miami Open in March, beating Novak Djokovic in the final having defeated Bautista Agut in the first round, but at Queen’s the teenager cut a frustrated figure as the 37-year-old Spaniard fought back after going a set down. The experienced Bautista Agut now meets Danish fourth seed Holger Rune who stormed back after losing the opening set to beat American qualifier Mackenzie McDonald 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. – Reuters

Draper won their only previous meeting when he beat Popyrin in straight sets earlier this year on his way to reaching the Qatar Open final, but faced a much tougher battle this time and needed the backing of the home crowd to pull him through. “There’s days where I need that extra support, today was one of them,” Draper said. “Tough match and credit to Alexei, it was a bit up and down but you guys helped me through that so thank you.” Draper found himself trailing when the Australian broke to lead 5-4 and served out to win the opening set but the 23-year-old Briton was unfazed and won four consecutive games to take the second set. In the decider Draper held two match points with Popyrin serving, but the Australian rallied to win four unanswered points to make it 5-5. In the tiebreak, Popyrin broke first and Draper

WORLD No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka complained after her second round Berlin Open match against Switzerland’s Rebeka Masarova was suspended due to bad light and dew yesterday. Sabalenka won the first set 6-2 before the umpire suspended play until today. The Belarusian was upset and told the umpire: “You are stopping the match because she says that side is slippery? I just played two games on that side.” The previous match, won by Liudmila Samsonova against third seed Jessica Pegula, took three hours and 21 minutes to complete. Samsonova beat the American 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in a match including two tie breaks. Earlier, Ons Jabeur beat Jasmine Paolini 6 1, 6-3 to reach the last eight. The victory was the Tunisian’s first over a top-five opponent since her run to the final at Wimbledon in 2023. Jabeur, who won on the Berlin grass in 2 022, will be joined in the quarters by eighth seed Paula Badosa, who beat Emma Navarro 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. At the Nottingham Open, Canadian fifth seed Leylah Fernandez cruised to the quarterfinals after a 6-3, 6-4 win over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa yesterday. ALEXANDER ZVEREV’S hunt for an elusive grasscourt title began with a clinical 6-2, 6-1 victory over Marcos Giron in the first round of the Halle Open yesterday in a match interrupted by an advertising hoarding falling on spectators. During the opening set, a section of the hoarding came crashing down from the upper tier onto spectators below, forcing the chair umpire to stop play. Zverev immediately procured an ice pack for an elderly woman who pressed it against her neck and the players waited patiently while tournament organisers scrambled to provide medical assistance. Organisers said the 62-year-old did not

“Cristina’s an amazing player and a great fighter. The last few times I played against her, it has always been a battle, so I knew today was going to be hard,” Fernandez said. “I’m just happy with the way

Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova staged a comeback to beat fourth seed Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, marking her first tour-level grass court quarterfinal. suffer any major injuries and was able to leave the stadium after the initial shock, but she was taken to hospital as a precaution. They added that drumming against the boards may have caused the screws to come loose. “There has never been anything like this in our 32-year tournament history. We deeply regret the incident,” tournament director Ralf Weber said in a statement, adding that she has been promised a season ticket for next year. World No. 3 Zverev showed no mercy with the home fans firmly behind the towering second seed who has finished runner-up twice in Halle.

“It was a great match for me, I thought it was quite high level. Maybe he wanted to play a bit better than he did, but all in all I felt like I didn’t let him play that well, which was important for me,” Zverev said. Earlier, eighth seed Karen Khachanov dispatched Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 7-5, 6-3 despite a nasty fall on the grass. Third seed Daniil Medvedev beat Frenchman Quentin Halys 6-2, 7-5 to claim the 400th tour-level win of his career as he advanced to the quarterfinals. Medvedev will face Alex Michelsen, who beat Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas for the third time in his career with a 7-6(5), 7-5 victory. – Reuters
