Verstappen admits driving into Russell was ‘not right’

Ű BY HARRY LATHAM-COYLE

Verstappen said on Instagram . “Our tyre choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fuelled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn’t have happened. “I always give everything out there for the team and emotions can run high. You win some together, you lose some together. See you in Montreal.” Verstappen also received three penalty points after the incident, leaving him just one point away from a race ban. Russell said Verstappen should have been given a stiffer punishment if the stewards deemed his actions intentional. “If it was truly deliberate then absolutely, because you cannot deliberately crash into another driver,” Russell said. “We are putting our lives on the line. We are fortunate the cars are as safe as they are these days but we shouldn’t take it for granted. “It felt very deliberate. It is something I have seen numerous times in simulator racing and go-karts. I have never seen it in a Formula 1 race. “It felt strange, bizarre and I really don’t know what was going through his mind. “It is a shame because Max is one of the best

drivers in the world but manoeuvres like that are totally unnecessary. “It lets him down, and it is a shame for all of the young kids looking up to us, aspiring to be Formula 1 drivers.” Tensions have long simmered between Russell and Verstappen after a number of contentious crashes and other incidents in recent years. Responding to the comments by the Mercedes driver, Verstappen said: “Well, I’ll bring some tissues next time. “He has his view, I have my view. It’s better not to comment. In life you shouldn’t regret too many things. (I have) no regrets.” After a weekend off, the F1 season will continue with the Canadian Grand Prix with race day in Montreal on Sunday June 15. – The Independent

M AX VERSTAPPEN (pic) has appeared to accept the blame for crashing into George Russell late on at the Spanish Grand Prix, admitting that the incident “shouldn’t have happened”. The Red Bull driver collided with his rival’s Mercedes after Verstappen had been advised by his team to give up his place to Russell on the third from last lap of the race. Following a safety-car restart, Verstappen ran off the track as he attempted to defend fourth position, before rejoining ahead of the British driver. Having slowed down at Turn 5 to seemingly allow Russell past, the four-time world champion accelerated to cause a collision. He would later give up his place before being hit with a 10-second penalty by the stewards, demoting him to 10th. And while stopping short of apologising to his fellow driver, Verstappen has said that frustration got the better of him after a disappointing day at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. “We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona, till the safety car came out,”

way that he commentates,” Horner replied when asked by racingnews365.com for his response to the German. “So I’ll leave it at that.” When pushed further on the threat of a looming ban for Verstappen, Horner indicated management of the situation was key. “You know, you can never guarantee anything,” he said. “I mean, he’s just got to keep his nose clean in the next couple of races, and then the first points come off at the end of June.” The Red Bull boss was also asked if he felt “the red mist” had descended on Verstappen, a charge Horner did not fully deny. “It was clear that you could hear he was frustrated, and he didn’t agree with both Charles or George,” he added. – The Independent/Agencies

f***!” On commentary duties for Sky Sports F1 , 2016 F1 world champion Rosberg said of Verstappen’s manoeuvre: “That is bad, that is seriously bad. “You need to black flag (disqualify) that, there’s no other way.” Instead, the stewards decided to impose a 10-second time penalty on Verstappen, dropping the Red Bull driver from fifth to 10th in the final standings. Elaborating further after the race, Rosberg added: “It looked like a retaliation, ramming into the opponent. That’s something that is extremely unacceptable, that’s why I said black flag.” Red Bull boss Christian Horner questioned Rosberg’s claim and gave it the short shrift. “Nico is quite sensationalist in the

Fury, Joshua dream fight ‘will definitely happen’ GEORGE GROVES has joined Ricky Hatton in labelling a potential clash between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua a toss-up. While “The Gypsy King” quashed any hopes of a battle with his long-time rival in January by announcing his retirement, fight fans have remained sceptical – given it’s the fifth time the 36-year-old has walked away from boxing. The pair, who have been on an inevitable path to lock horns for the entirety of their respective careers, have never confirmed a fight date. Carl Froch recently dubbed a potential bout a “total mismatch”, favouring Fury, yet Groves holds a different perspective. Speaking exclusively with Express Sports, Groves said: “Joshua’s last loss to Daniel Dubois was pretty devastating. “Dubois got it right that night, he jumped on Joshua, who probably wanted to ease into the fight. “He wasn’t able to, and he got knocked out badly, on the biggest stage, at the tail end of his career. That’s serious mileage. “But Fury’s also had back-to-back losses, maybe three if you include the (Francis) Verstappen been disqualified from the Spanish Grand Prix after a late collision with George Russell. A late safety car threw the result into chaos, with Verstappen struggling at the restart on hard tyres, with those around him on quicker, soft tyres. Having lost third place to Charles Leclerc, Verstappen was then told by his engineer to give fourth place to Russell after the pair made contact at turn 1. Yet when the Dutchman seemed to let his arch-rival through, the Red Bull driver swerved aggressively into the Briton’s car. The pair made contact, but a matter of seconds later, Russell did take fourth place. The Brit commented: “What the should have

Young bests Homa, Fowler in US Open qualifying playoff

CAMERON YOUNG made a birdie putt to win a five-for-one playoff at his US Open final qualifying site yesterday – and all but ensured that Max Homa and Rickie Fowler would not qualify for the major. The playoff at the star-studded Columbus, Ohio, qualifying site was the highlight of a busy day billed as the longest in golf. Golfers who advanced through local qualifying gathered at 10 final qualifying sites across North America to play 36 holes and contend for 47 spots in the US Open field. The available spots at each site were determined by the size and strength of each field. The field at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus was filled with PGA Tour players who competed at the Memorial Tournament over the weekend. South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen ran away with medalist honours at Kinsale, shooting 13-under 131.

Ngannou fight, which didn’t impress. He was lucky to get the decision. Then he lost twice to (Oleksandr) Usyk. “That’s probably just as mentally draining as Joshua’s loss to Dubois. I think it’s a pick ‘em fight. It comes down to who performs on the night, who wants it more, who’s got the most left. I disagree with Froch – I don’t think it’s a walkover.” It comes as former light welterweight champion Hatton also shared his views on the fight, telling Vegas Insider : “It’s a tough one, I think it’s 50/50, I wouldn’t say either would be the favourite.” At the start of the new year, Fury announced his retirement from boxing on social media. However, Groves is sceptical about whether the former two-time champion is genuinely done with the sport. He added: “He’s retired five times now, so we know retirement means nothing. I’m almost certain he’ll fight Anthony Joshua once Joshua recovers from injury. That’ll probably be later this year, likely in Saudi Arabia. They’re both prize fighters.” – Express Newspapers

Bud Cauley, Lanto Griffin, Justin Lower and Korn Ferry Tour player Harrison Ott rounded out the top five at Kinsale, but the sixth and final opening had to be determined by a five-man playoff of players tied at 5 under: Young, Homa, Fowler, Chase Johnson and Eric Cole. Homa and Fowler were the only two to find the fairway off the tee of the first playoff hole, but Young hit out of the rough to 10 feet of the pin, while Homa was 15 feet away and Fowler missed the green entirely. Fowler ended up bogeying and being the first fully eliminated. Homa joined Cole and Johnson for a second playoff hole to determine two alternate positions, and Homa was the odd man out – four-putting for bogey to miss in dubious fashion. A six-time PGA Tour winner, Homa could sneak in is if he makes the top 60 in the world on June 9. Homa is entered in this week’s RBC Canadian Open. – Field Level Media
