YOUTH and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh hopes that newly-appointed Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz will review the national governing body’s ecosystem to ensure the welfare of all national shuttlers is safeguarded. Yeoh also advised shuttlers to remain under the BAM umbrella instead of turning professional so that they can continue receiving full government support through the association. “There are many factors to be considered when a shuttler contemplates staying with BAM or turning pro,”Yeoh said. “The advantage of staying with BAM is that

Meanwhile, Yeoh said she was satisfied with the performance of the national shuttlers at the 2025 Malaysia Masters. “I believe that with the presence of coaches and the support from the RTG (Road to Gold) programme, we can continue to raise their performance level. “We have allocated a budget for the National Sports Council (NSC) talent development programme this year to ensure a constant supply of new talents,” she said. – Bernama

Faith in the Fire Dragon Herry can lift more Malaysian pairs into world top 15, says Rexy
N ATIONAL doubles coach ing director Rexy Mainaky is confident that men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi has what it takes to lead more Malaysian pairs into the top 15 of the world rank ings. Rexy said this optimism stems from the encouraging results shown by several pairs since Herry began his tenure in February. If the current trajectory continues, Rexy believes it could mirror the successful era during his previous stint as national doubles head coach from 2005 to 2012. “I’m hopeful we can relive that era when we had at least five to six pairs in the top 15. With a seasoned coach like Herry and the training methods he’s applying, I’m positive this can become a reality,” Rexy told reporters after the 2025 Malaysia Masters yesterday. Among the former Malaysian men’s doubles pairs who broke into the world’s top 15 under Rexy between 2005 and 2012 were 2006 Asian Games gold medallists Koo Kien Keat–Tan Boon Heong, 2007 World Championship bronze medallists Choong Tan Fook–Lee Wan Wah, as well as Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif–Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Gan Teik Chai– Tan Bin Shen. Herry, widely known as the “Fire Dragon,” is a high-profile coach whose credentials

for the Maybank Challenge Cup in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow has attracted the attention of several Southeast Asian heads of state. According to sources close to the organisers, several Asean leaders are expected to attend the 8.45pm match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. Meanwhile, event organiser ProEvents confirmed that over 60,000 tickets have been sold for the match, describing the overwhelming response from fans as a reflection of the deeper significance behind the clash. “We are truly moved by the overwhelming response from the fans. NATIONAL karate ace C. Shahmalarani has done the nation proud by winning a silver medal in the women’s kumite U-50kg at the 2025 Asian Karate Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Sunday. The achievement is all the more meaningful as it marks Malaysia’s first silver medal in the kumite discipline in 13 years. Shahmalarani’s hopes of clinching gold were dashed after the 26 year-old athlete lost in the final to home crowd favourite Gulshan Alimardanova 1-7 in the gold medal bout held at Yunusobod Sports Complex. “This wasn’t an overnight success. It took years of perseverance – five early exits, each one a lesson in patience, grit, and growth. After countless setbacks, I’ve finally reached the moment I’ve been striving for,” she said in a Facebook post. For the record, former national karateka R. Loganesha Rao won silver in the men’s kumite U-55kg at the 2012 edition, which was also held in Tashkent, while Malaysia’s last gold medal came in 2011 through Mohd Hatta Mahamut in the men’s kumite U-84kg in Quanzhou, China.
