Lowry, Straka share lead Windy Truist sets up showdown of Ryder Cup teammates

I RELAND’S Shane Lowry and Austrian Sepp Straka dueled down the stretch to emerge tied for the lead through 54 holes at the PGA Tour Truist Championship yesterday, three strokes clear of their nearest rivals. Lowry, the 2019 British Open champion, conjured five birdies with two bogeys for a 3 under 67 and a 14-under total of 196. Straka also found five birdies with just one bogey, posting a four-under 66 at a wind whipped Philadelphia Cricket Club – the pair setting up a showdown of European Ryder Cup teammates. “It’s great to see the way the conditions come into it today,” Lowry said. “It was very tough today in those winds, particularly tough to hole putts.” American Keith Mitchell started the day with a one-shot lead and settled for a 1-over 71 that left him tied for third with compatriot Justin Thomas, who curled in a tough birdie putt at 18 to cap a four-under 66 to join Mitchell on 11-under. Lowry shot out of the gate with birdies at the first and second. He bounced back from a bogey at the seventh with birdies at the ninth and 10th – where he blasted out of a greenside bunker and rattled in a 17-foot putt. Lowry had been overtaken by Straka by the time he arrived at the 17th, where he landed

his second shot from the fairway four feet from the pin and made the birdie putt to regain a share of the lead. Now he’ll fight for his first PGA title since he won last year’s Zurich Classic team event with Rory McIlroy. “Keep knocking on the door and eventually you’ll go through it,” he said. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama was alone in fifth after posting the low round of the day, piling up nine birdies in a seven-under 63 that put him on 10-under 200. McIlroy, who completed a career Grand Slam at the Masters, headlined a group of five players tied for sixth on eight-under 202. McIlroy was charging with birdies at the fourth, fifth and sixth before a double bogey at the seventh and a bogey at the eighth stalled his pursuit of the leaders. He added one more birdie at the 10th in a 1-under 69. The event was moved from its usual home at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, because that course – where McIlroy has won four PGA Tour titles – is hosting this week’s 107th PGA Championship. England’s Justin Rose, runner-up in a playoff to McIlroy at Augusta National, withdrew before the third round because of illness, saying on social media he wanted to “focus on a quick recovery prior to this week”. – AFP WORLD NO. 2 Jeeno Thitikul defied difficult, windy conditions to card nine birdies, offsetting a mid-round double-bogey and regaining the lead in the LPGA Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National yesterday. “I don’t know how crazy I am playing out there with this strongest wind ever,” said the Thai star, whose 7-under 65 gave her a 54-hole total of 14-under 202 and a one-stroke lead over France’s Celine Boutier. Boutier’s seven birdies included three in a row at 15, 16 and 17 in a six-under 66 for 203. Jeeno, who led by two after the first round but had slipped one off the lead on Saturday, said her only strategy in the blustery weather was “just trying to keep it on the fairway and on the green. “I knew it’s going to be a really tough day and I have to be patient out there,”added Jeeno, who claimed the most recent of her four LPGA titles at the Tour Championship last year.“So I don’t know how I did that, but I take it!” Jeeno took a week off after the Chevron Championship, where she felt poor putting doomed her bid for a first major title and with the frustration she felt “burnout with the putting”. She said work at home had confirmed her putting stroke was in order, and some work on her speed and a step back from the stress has paid dividends this week. Boutier was also solid on the greens needing 26 putts compared to 31 in the rainy second round. “I made a few really long putts today and yesterday, which normally doesn’t happen that much,” Boutier said. “So I feel like that helped me out quite a bit.” She, too, said patience was key in the strong winds. The conditions are expected to be more favorable overnight, but Boutier said that would bring a different challenge. “I’m assuming scores are going to be kind of low,”said the French player, whose six LPGA titles include her home major, the Evian Championship, in 2023. “We’ll see what happens, but happy to be in this position.” World No. 1 and defending champion Nelly Korda, who seized a share of the halfway lead, shook off an opening bogey to post five birdies in a 4-under 68 that left her tied for third with Andra Lee, one of her overnight co-leaders who had six birdies and two bogeys in her 68. – AFP
