Gauff outlasts Uchijima for first win since AO WORLD NO. 3 Coco Gauff secured her first match win since the Australian Open yesterday, scratching out a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in Indian Wells. Like all the seeds in the combined ATP Masters and WTA 1000 event, Gauff had a first-round bye, while Uchijima, ranked 52nd, beat Britain’s Emma Raducanu in straight sets in the first round.

Morikawa holds one-shot lead at Bay Hill COLLIN MORIKAWA wanted to make the challenges associated with playing at Bay Hill Club and Lodge stress–free, and he’ll need to do that for one more day.

“Fairways are narrow, rough’s thick, lies aren’t easy, and you just got to get lucky here and there with a couple,” he said. Morikawa didn’t post a victory in 2024, so he’ll aim for a calm approach as he bids for his first win since the 2023 Zozo Championship. “I would say the guys that are winning on a constant basis, they’re playing free, he said. “That’s how I’m going to go out (Sunday).” Henley rolled in four consecutive birdies on his way to 67. Those helped counter a pair of bogeys during the round. Canada’s Corey Conners (69) is third at 8– under. Australia’s Jason Day (69) moved to fourth place at 7–under while Michael Kim (67) and Tony Finau (68) are at 5-under. – Field Level Media

Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, coughed up 21 double faults among a stream of unforced errors and was often clearly frustrated. She said she would have liked to play better, but after dropping her opening matches in at WTA tournaments in Qatar and Dubai in the wake of her Australian Open quarterfinal exit she wasn’t complaining. “It’s been a rough couple of weeks, and I’m just happy to get a win on the court,” Gauff said. “No one likes to lose, and I came in here with determination. It wasn’t my best tennis, but a win is a win.”

Gauff appeared to have taken control when she took a 4-0 lead in the third set over an opponent that had received treatment from a trainer before the set. But the American twice failed to serve out the match but finally put it away in the tiebreaker on her fifth match point. She earned a third-round meeting with Greece’s Maria Sakkari, who also snapped a three-match skid with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova. Sakkari beat Gauff in the semifinals here last year to reach her second Indian Wells final in three years. – AFP

Morikawa shot a 5–under 67 yesterday to move into the lead through three rounds of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida. “For the most part, it was fairly stress–free,” Morikawa said. “I thought I did a really good job on the greens, just kind of not lagging it, but just hitting good pace on the putts.” Morikawa drained a birdie putt from almost 12 feet away on the last hole to gain sole possession of first place. The six-time PGA Tour winner said he knows there are tricky components on this layout, so he’s prepared for that mentally.

Zandschulp kept the pressure on both from the baseline and at the net and Djokovic’s errors began to pile up again. Van de Zandschulp took control with a break for 3-1, reeling off the last five games as Djokovic was unable to stop the bleeding. “The first three games, four games of the third set were quite close,” Djokovic, seeded sixth, said. “Had my chances. Was just some awful mistakes.” Italian Matteo Arnaldi sprung another upset, beating seventh seed Andrey Rublev 6-4, 7-5. Djokovic and Rublev followed top seed Alexander Zverev and fourth seed Casper Ruud as second-round casualties. With Zverev out and world number one Jannik Sinner serving a three-month drugs ban, world No. 3 Alcaraz is the highest seed left in the men’s draw. Alcaraz, trying to join Djokovic and Roger Federer as the only men to win three straight Indian Wells titles, eased into his defence with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over France’s Quentin Halys. He admitted he was feeling some nerves to start the match, but they evaporated amid a strong all-around performance. “I was nervous at the beginning of the match,” he told a supportive crowd. “The first match is never easy so I was trying to be focused on my game. “I just tried to be relaxed, as relaxed as I can. Can always be better, but I’m ready for the (next) round and excited.” Women’s world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka opened her campaign with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over rising US talent McCartney Kessler while Madison Keys subdued hard hitting Russian Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-0. – AFP There remains no free movement of players between the tours, and the only time LIV players can currently face the best of the PGA Tour is at those four majors. O’Neil, however, is optimistic. “Eventually, I believe that golf will open up again,” he told AFP . “We would like player movement. We’d like opportunities for our incredible stars to play around the world. “And I think that day will come. But in the meantime, let’s enjoy the majors.” Asked if there was a place for LIV in a future integrated golf calendar, along the lines of cricket’s money-spinning IPL, O’Neil said he saw LIV as the pinnacle of the sport. “We’re very much the Formula One of golf,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any other parallel that you can find.” – AFP

first match to lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp as two time defending champ Carlos Alcaraz advanced. “No excuses for a poor performance,” 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic said after 37 unforced errors in a 6 2, 3-6, 6-1 defeat. “It doesn’t feel great when you play this way on the court,” he added. “But congratulations to my opponent – just a bad day in the office, I guess, for me.” Djokovic is just the latest in van de Zandschulp’s string of superstar victims. He stunned Alcaraz at the

really tough day. That’s always one thing I’m trying to do well.” After 14 unforced errors in the first set, Djokovic cleaned things up in the second, grabbing a quick break on the way to a 3-0 lead.

Golf will open up again, says new LIV boss

THE new CEO of LIV told AFP the world of golf will eventually “open up again” and the Saudi bankrolled league has an important role in growing the game around the world. American sports executive Scott O’Neil, who has in the past run NBA and NHL teams, took the reins from Greg Norman in January. The period since has seen a flurry of meetings between the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and their Saudi backers, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), but still no deal reached to reunite the sport. “I think LIV has a place and an important place, and it’s very different from anybody else in golf,” O’Neil told AFP in an exclusive interview. Only days ago leading PGA Tour player Rory McIlroy said that a deal to reunify golf did not feel any closer.

O’Neil would not comment on the stop start talks with the PGA Tour but pointed out that the once icy reception from golf’s majors to the breakaway series had thawed. “I feel like the narrative just generally is shifting in and around LIV and golf,” said O’Neil, who is the former CEO of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. “That’s probably most highlighted by each of the four majors in inviting LIV players and providing a pathway for LIV players to play in the majors, which I think is a great, positive step in the right direction.” But as it stands LIV’s multiple major champions and greats of the game such as Jon Rahm, current US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson only go up against the cream of the PGA Tour four times a year.
